例如: createasustainablefuture 創造一個永續發展的未來 sustain(v)維持、保持 現在來分析一下如何勞記。

  字根 tain/ten=hold 這二個拉丁字根都有hold之意，不同處是tain多做動詞使用，ten做名詞/形容詞   sustain(v) sustainment(n) sustainable(a) sus/tain=under/hold=support維持(在下面撐住) aself-sustainingcommunity自給自足的社區 sustainablelearning持續學習     舉一反三   attain(v) attainment(n) attainable(a) at/tain=to/hold=achieve達成 Somepeoplevaluespiritualattainmentovermaterialwealth. 有些人重視精神成就勝於物質財富。

  contain(v) container(n) containable(a)   con/ tain=together/hold =include包含 (toholdsomethingtogether都握在一起) Thisfilecontainsalotofconfidentialdocuments. 這個文件夾裝有大量的機密文件。

  detain(v) detention(n) de/tain=away/hold=takeintocustody拘留 (toforcesbd.tostayinaplace帶到一邊分開) Thesuspectwasdetainedbythepolice. 這個嫌疑犯已被警方拘留。

  obtain(v) obtainability(n) obtainable(a) obtain=toward/hold擁有 (這個東西朝著自己握住) Sheobtainedthefirsteditionsofthesebooks. 她拿到這些書的第一版。

  pertainto(v) per/tain=thoroughly/hold=relateto與…有關 (完全捉住就是有關) Theyareonlyinterestedinthematterspertainingtotheisland. 他們只對與這個島上有關事情有興趣。

  retain(v) retention(n)   re/tain=again/hold =keep保持、保有 (toholdontosomethingwithoutlosingit 一直握著也就是一直持有) Manyplantsareabletoretaincarbondioxide.許多植物可以留住二氧化碳。

  tenable(a) ten/able=hold/can=canbeheldeasily站的住腳的 Thistheoryisnolongertenable.這個理論已經站不住腳了。

  tenacious(a) ten/ious=hold/adj.=holdingtightlyontosth. 緊握的 (如果緊握著一個意見，也可以引申為堅決的) She’sanextremelytenaciousentrepreneur.她是個非常有韌性的企業家。
