  • Datawerecollectedthroughsurveysthatweremailedoutto72participantsintheUnitedStatesandCanada.Participantsintheprojectcompletedthesurveyanonymouslyandfilledoutaseparateconsentform. Recipientswhochoosenottoparticipatewereaskedtosimplyreturnthematerials. Respondentshaveappointmentsinavarietyofdepartments,includingEnglish,Linguistics,foreignlanguages(e.g.,Spanish,German),aswellasincombineddepartmentsofModernLanguages. Asignificantpercentageofrespondentsaremembersofdepartmentsdedicatedspecificallytothefield,e.g.,SecondLanguageStudies.

  • Respondentswerefacultymembersfrombothprivateandpublicinstitutions,themajoritybeingresearchoriented.Toprotecttheanonymityoftherespondents,weareunabletolisttheinstitutionshereortofurtheridentifythem.

  • Thesurveyisincludedhereasanappendix. Respondentswereaskedquestionsregardingtheminimumandoptimumstandardsfortenurepromotiontotherankofassociateprofessor. Specifically,theywereaskedtheirviewsontheimportanceofvarioustypesofpublicationsandpresentations. TheywerealsoaskedtorankvariouspressesandjournalsfortheirimportanceinthefieldofSLA.Spacewasincludedforrespondentstomakecommentsonissuesnotcoveredbyspecificquestionsinthesurvey.

  • Therewere45respondentstothestudy(63%). Table1showsthebreakdownfordepartmentalaffiliation,rankandlanguagestudied.Inthesubsequenttables,arankingof1indicatesstrongdisagreementwiththestatementandarankingof5,strongagreement. Table2showsthemeanresponsestoquestionspertainingtothepublicationofabookasatenurerequirement.Tables3and4displayresponsesonissuesotherthanbookpublication,principally,theuseofjournalarticlesasacriterionfortenureandpromotion.Table5displaystherankingofmajorjournalsthatpublishworkinSLA.
