Gameplay[edit] Rules[edit] Agroupofcontestantsoneachepisodeplayapreliminaryroundcalled"FastestFingerFirst".Allaregivenaquestionbythehostandfouranswerswhichmustbeplacedwithinaparticularorder;inthefirstseasonoftheoriginalversion(1998)andthefirstfourseasonsoftheAustralianversion(1999–2002),contestantshavetoansweramultiple-choicequestion.Ifanycontestantsarevisuallyimpaired,thehostreadsthequestionandfourchoicesallatonce,thenrepeatsthechoicesafterthemusicfortheroundbegins.Thecontestantwhoanswerscorrectlyinthefastesttimegoesontoplaythemaingame.Intheeventthatnoonegetsthequestionright,anotherquestionisgiven;iftwoormorecontestantsanswercorrectlybutwiththesametime,theyaregivenatie-breakertodeterminewhowillmoveon.Thisroundisonlyusedwhenanewcontestantisbeingchosentoplaythemainround,andcanbeplayedmorethanonceinanepisodeamongthoseremainingwithinthegroupseekingtoplaythemaingame.Incelebrityeditions,theroundisnotused;celebritiesautomaticallytakepartinthemaingame. Shuffleformat[edit] On13September2010,theUSversionadoptedanothersignificantchangetoitsformat.Inthischange,thegamefeaturedtworounds.Thefirstroundconsistedoftenquestions,inwhichthecashprizeassociatedtoeachvalue,alongwiththecategoryanddifficultyforeachquestionisrandomisedpergame.Assuch,thedifficultyofthequestioninthisround,isnottiedtothevalueassociatedtoit,andacontestantdoesnotknowwhatamounttheywonunlesstheyprovideacorrectanswer,orchoosetowalkaway.Aspartofthisformat,theamountofmoneyacontestantwoninthisroundwasbanked,butiftheywalkawaybeforecompletingtheround,theyleftwithhalftheamountthathadbeenbanked;iftheygaveanincorrectanswerduringthisround,theyleftwithjust$1,000.[13]Iftheyansweredalltenquestionscorrectly,theythenmovedontothesecondround,whichstucktothestandardformatofthegameshow–theremainingquestionsaresettogeneralknowledgeandfeaturecashprizesofhigh,non-cumulativevalues.Thecontestantcan,atthispoint,walkawaywiththetotalamountbankedfromthefirstround;otherwise,anincorrectanswermeanttheyleftwith$25,000.TheformatwaslatermodifiedforthefourteenthseasonoftheUSversion,butretainedthesamearrangementforthelastfourquestions. AdifferentvariantwasusedintheTaiwaneseversion,exceptwithoutanysafetynetsoranyoptiontoquit;however,iftheywereincorrectonanyquestion,thecontestant'swinningswonuptothepointwillbecutbyhalf. Lifelines[edit] Duringastandardplayofthegame,acontestantisgivenaseriesoflifelinestoaidthemwithquestions.Inthestandardformat,acontestanthasaccesstothreelifelines–thecontentscanuseeachonlyoncepergame,butcanusemorethanoneonasinglequestion.Thestandardlifelinesusedintheoriginalformatofthegameshowinclude: 50:50(Fifty-Fifty):thegame'scomputereliminatestwowronganswersfromthecurrentquestion,leavingbehindthecorrectanswerandoneincorrectanswer.From2000,theselectionoftwoincorrectanswerswererandom. PhoneaFriend:thecontestantisconnectedwithafriendoveraphonelineandisgiven30secondstoreadthequestionandanswersandsolicitassistance.Thetimebeginsassoonasthecontestantstartsreadingthequestion. IntheUS,"AsktheAudience"and"PhoneaFriend"hadcorporatesponsorshipatdifferentperiods.TheoriginalAT&Tsponsored"Phone-a-Friend"duringtheoriginalABCprimetimeshowandthesyndicatedversion'sfirstseason;thecurrentAT&Tsponsoredthe2009primetimeepisodes.From2004to2006,AOLsponsored"AsktheAudience"andallowedusersofInstantMessengertoparticipateinthelifelinebyaddingthescreennameMillionaireIMtotheircontactlist.Whenacontestantusedthelifelineduringtheshow,userswouldreceiveaninstantmessagewiththequestionandthefourpossibleanswersandvoteforthecorrectanswer.Thecomputertalliedtheseresultsalongsidetheresultsfromthestudioaudience.[17] Contestantspre-selectmultiplefriendsfor"PhoneaFriend".Assoonasthecontestantbeginstoplay,producersalertthefriendsandaskthemtokeeptheirphonelinesfreeandwaitforthreeringsbeforeanswering.[18]On11January2010,theUSversioneliminatedtheuseof"PhoneaFriend"inresponsetoanincreasingtrendofcontestants'friendsusingwebsearchenginesandotherinternetresourcestoassistthemduringthecalls.Producerscametofeelthatthelifelinewasgivingcontestantswhohadfriendswithinternetaccessanunfairadvantage;theyalsobelieveditwascontrarytotheoriginalintentofthelifeline:friendsprovidedassistancebasedonwhattheyknew.[19] DuringrecordingsofthecurrentBritishversion,securitypersonnelfromtheproductionofficestaywithcontestants'friendsattheirhomestoensureintegrity.DuringThePeoplePlayspecialsin2012and2013,friendstravelledtothestudioandstayedbackstage.Whenacontestantusedthelifeline,thefriendtheycalledappearedonamonitorinthestudio,andboththefriendandcontestantwereabletoseeandcommunicatewitheachother.[20][21] Uniquelifelines[edit] Duringthecourseofthegameshow'shistory,therewereanumberofuniquelifelineadditionsinvariousversionsoftheprogramme: SwitchtheQuestion–UsedintheUSversionbetween2004and2008,andintheUKoriginalduringcelebrityspecialsbetween2002–2003andstandardepisodesbetween2010and2014,thislifelinebecameavailableafteracontestantansweredthetenthquestionofthegame.Thecomputerreplacedthecurrentquestionwithanotherofthesamedifficulty.Thecontestantcouldnotreinstateanylifelinesusedontheoriginalquestion.[11]AvariationofthislifelinefortheUSversioncalled"CuttheQuestion",wasbroughtintousein2014foraweek-longrunofspecialepisodesthatfeaturedchildcontestants,inwhichitcouldonlybeusedwithinthefirsttenquestions.ThisisalsousedintheIndianversionasapermanentlifeline.But,itisavailableanytimeinthegame(exceptforthehighestcashprizequestion)andparticipantscanchoosethetopicfromwhichthequestionistakenfrom.Thedifficultyleveldependsonthecashprizeforthequestion. x2(DoubleDip)–OneoftwolifelinescreatedfortheSuperMillionairespin-offoftheUSversion.Whenused,thislifelineallowedcontestantstohavetwoguessesataquestion,butforbadethemfromusinganyotherremaininglifelinesorfromwalkingawaywiththeircurrentwinnings.Iftheshowallows,contestantscanfirstuse"50:50"andthenused"DoubleDip"onthesamequestion,guaranteeingthemthecorrectanswer.WhenthestandardUSformatincorporatedatimelimitonquestions,theshowretired"50:50"andreplaceditwith"DoubleDip".[11]ThislifelinewasalsousedintheRussianversion(withoutaclockformat)butdidnotreplace50:50.[22] ThreeWiseMen–TheotherlifelinecreatedfortheSuperMillionaire.Whenchosen,asequesteredpanelofthreeexperts(chosenbytheproducers)appearsviaface-to-faceaudioandvideofeedtoprovideassistance.Like"PhoneaFriend",thislifelineincorporateda30-secondtimelimitforitsuse.ThislifelinewasalsousedintheRussianversionbetween2006and2008butdidnotfeatureexperts. TwoWiseMen(orcanbecalledAskTwoExperts)–UsedintheVietnameseversionoftheshowfromepisodesbroadcaston5May2020,replacing"AskThreeoftheAudience".Ithasthesamefunctionas"ThreeWiseMen",howeverthereareonlytwoexpertsinsteadofthree.Itbecomesavailableafterthefifthquestion.
