ThetechnicaldivisionofLawsonStatewasfoundedinBirmingham,Alabama,in1949,whentheWallacePattersonStateTradeSchoolActof1947permittedtheestablishmentofWenonahStateTechnicalInstitute.TheschoolwascreatedtooffertradecoursestoBlackstudents.Dr.TheodoreAlfredLawsonservedasthefirstdirectoroftheschool,whichwasrenamedWenonahTechnicalCollegein1963.[1][8]LSCC'sacademicdivision,WenonahStateJuniorCollege,wasestablishedin1965underAlabamastatelegislature.[9][10]Dr.Lawsonservedasthefirstpresidentofthejuniorcollege,whichwasalsodesignedtoserveBlackstudents,andwasrenamedTheodoreAlfredLawsonStateJuniorCollegeinhishonor.[1][10] OnOctober1,1973,WenonahTechnicalCollegeandTheodoreAlfredLawsonStateJuniorCollegemergedtoformT.A.LawsonStateCommunityCollegeat3060WilsonRoadSWinBirmingham.ThislocationiscurrentlyknownasLSCC'sBirminghamCampus.[1][9][11][8] In2005,BessemerStateTechnicalCollegewassettomergewithLSCCasapartofastatewideefforttoremoveduplicatecommunitycollegeprograms.[12]ThemergerwasofficiallyapprovedbytheAlabamaStateBoardofEducationandSouthernAssociationofCollegesandSchoolsinJune2005.[9]Asaresultofthemerger,BessemerTechnicalCollege,locatedat1100NinthAvenueSWinBessemer,Alabama,becameLSCC'sBessemerCampus.[11] LSCChasanopenadmissionspolicyandofferscreditsforlifeexperience.[2]Thecollegeoffersdualenrollmentprogramstolocalhighschoolstudents,[15]aswellasagovernment-fundedcollegepreparatoryprogramtostudentsattendingBirmingham-areahighschools.[16]Inadditiontoitsassociateandcertificatedegreeprograms,LSCCoffersadulteducation,GEDandfast-trackcareertrainingcourses.[17][13] LSCChastransferagreementswithfour-yearinstitutionsinAlabama.TheagreementsallowstudentstoautomaticallytransferaftercompletinganassociatedegreeatLSCC.[18] LSCCisaStudentSupportServicesTRIOprogramparticipant.Thegovernment-fundedprogramhelpsstudentswhoareeducationallydisadvantagedanddisabledgraduatefromcollege,andsupportslow-incomeandfirst-generationcollegestudentsinachievingtheircareerandeconomicgoals.[16][19]
