FleetwoodMac'sfemalememberslivedintwoofSausalito'sseafrontproperties,whilethemenresidedattheRecordPlant'shillsideaccommodation. InFebruary1976,FleetwoodMacconvenedattheRecordPlantinSausalito,California,withhiredengineersKenCaillatandRichardDashut.Productiondutiesweresharedbythethreeparties,whilethemoretechnicallyadeptCaillatwasresponsibleformostoftheengineering;hetookaleaveofabsencefromWallyHeiderStudiosinLosAngelesonthepremisethatFleetwoodMacwouldeventuallyusetheirfacilities.[14]Theset-upinSausalitoincludedanumberofsmallrecordingroomsinalarge,windowless,woodenbuilding.Mostbandmemberscomplainedaboutthestudioandwantedtorecordattheirhomes,butFleetwooddidnotallowanymoves.[15]ChristineMcVieandNicksdecidedtoliveintwocondominiumsnearthecity'sharbour,whilethemalecontingentstayedatthestudio'slodgeintheadjacenthills.[16]Recordingoccurredinasix-by-nine-metreroomwhichincludeda3M24-tracktapemachine,arangeofhigh-qualitymicrophones,andanAPImixingconsolewith550Aequalisers;thelatterwereusedtocontrolfrequencydifferencesoratrack'stimbre.AlthoughCaillatwasimpressedwiththeset-up,hefeltthattheroomlackedambiencebecauseofits"verydeadspeakers"andlargeamountsofsoundproofing.[14] Therecord'sworkingtitleinSausalitowasYesterday'sGone.[17]Buckinghamtookchargeofthestudiosessionstomake"apopalbum".[18]AccordingtoDashut,whileFleetwoodandtheMcViescamefromanimprovisationalblues-rockbackground,theguitaristunderstood"thecraftofrecordmaking".[19]Duringtheformativestagesofcompositions,BuckinghamandChristineMcVieplayedguitarandpianotogethertocreatethealbum'sbasicstructures.ThelatterwastheonlyclassicallytrainedmusicianinFleetwoodMac,butbothsharedasimilarsenseofmusicality.[20]Whenthebandjammed,Fleetwoodoftenplayedhisdrumkitoutsidethestudio'spartitionscreentobettergaugeCaillat'sandDashut'sreactionstothemusic'sgroove.[21]BaffleswereplacedaroundthedrumsandaroundJohnMcVie,whoplayedhisbassguitarfacingFleetwood.Buckinghamperformedclosetotherhythmsection,whileChristineMcVie'skeyboardswerekeptawayfromthedrumkit.CaillatandDashutspentaboutninedaysworkingwitharangeofmicrophonesandamplifierstogetalargersound,beforediscoveringtheycouldadjustthesoundeffectivelyontheAPImixingconsole.[14] Asthestudiosessionsprogressed,thebandmembers'newintimaterelationshipsthatformedaftervariousseparationsstartedtohaveanegativeeffectonFleetwoodMac.[22][23]ThemusiciansdidnotmeetorsocialiseaftertheirdailyworkattheRecordPlant.Atthetime,thehippiemovementstillaffectedSausalito'scultureanddrugswerereadilyavailable.Open-endedbudgetsenabledthebandandtheengineerstobecomeself-indulgent;[15][24]sleeplessnightsandtheextensiveuseofcocainemarkedmuchofthealbum'sproduction.[11]ChrisStone,oneoftheRecordPlant'sowners,indicatedin1997thatFleetwoodMacbrought"excessatitsmostexcessive"bytakingoverthestudioforlongandextremelyexpensivesessions;hestated,"Thebandwouldcomeinat7 at night,haveabigfeast,partytill 1 or 2inthemorning,andthenwhentheyweresowhacked-outtheycouldn'tdoanything,they'dstartrecording".[25] "Trauma,Trau-ma.Thesessionswerelikeacocktailpartyeverynight—peopleeverywhere.Weendedupstayingintheseweirdhospitalrooms...andofcourseJohnandmewerenotexactlythebestoffriends."[4] FollowingovertwomonthsinSausalito,Fleetwoodarrangedaten-daytourtogivethebandabreakandgetfanfeedback.Aftertheconcerts,recordingresumedatvenuesinLosAngeles,[13]includingWallyHeiderStudios.ChristineMcVieandNicksdidnotattendmostofthesessionsandtooktimeoffuntiltheywereneededtorecordanyremainingvocals.TherestofFleetwoodMac,withCaillatandDashut,struggledtofinalisetheoverdubbingandmixingofRumoursaftertheSausalitotapesweredamagedbyrepeateduseduringrecording;thekickandsnaredrumaudiotrackssounded"lifeless".[14]Asell-outautumntouroftheUSwascancelledtoallowthecompletionofthealbum,[4]whosescheduledreleasedateofSeptember1976waspushedback.[30]AspecialistwashiredtorectifytheSausalitotapesusingavari-speedoscillator.Throughapairofheadphoneswhichplayedthedamagedtapesinhisleftearandthesafetymasterrecordingsinhisright,heconvergedtheirrespectivespeedsaidedbythetimingsprovidedbythesnareandhi-hataudiotracks.[14]FleetwoodMacandtheirco-producerswanteda"no-filler"finalproduct,inwhicheverytrackseemedapotentialsingle.Afterthefinalmasteringstageandhearingthesongsback-to-back,thebandmemberssensedtheyhadrecordedsomething"prettypowerful".[31]
