FleetwoodMac'sfemalememberslivedintwoofSausalito'sseafrontproperties,whilethemenresidedattheRecordPlant'shillsideaccommodation. InFebruary1976,FleetwoodMacconvenedattheRecordPlantinSausalito,California,withhiredengineersKenCaillatandRichardDashut.Productiondutiesweresharedbythethreeparties,whilethemoretechnicallyadeptCaillatwasresponsibleformostoftheengineering;hetookaleaveofabsencefromWallyHeiderStudiosinLosAngelesonthepremisethatFleetwoodMacwouldeventuallyusetheirfacilities.[14]Theset-upinSausalitoincludedanumberofsmallrecordingroomsinalarge,windowless,woodenbuilding.Mostbandmemberscomplainedaboutthestudioandwantedtorecordattheirhomes,butFleetwooddidnotallowanymoves.[15]ChristineMcVieandNicksdecidedtoliveintwocondominiumsnearthecity'sharbour,whilethemalecontingentstayedatthestudio'slodgeintheadjacenthills.[16]Recordingoccurredinasix-by-nine-metreroomwhichincludeda3M24-tracktapemachine,arangeofhigh-qualitymicrophones,andanAPImixingconsolewith550Aequalisers;thelatterwereusedtocontrolfrequencydifferencesoratrack'stimbre.AlthoughCaillatwasimpressedwiththeset-up,hefeltthattheroomlackedambiencebecauseofits"verydeadspeakers"andlargeamountsofsoundproofing.[14]
