It'shardtomakeagenuinelyuniquefilminthisdayandage,andthisfilmholdsaveryrealpotentialofbeingprettyrefreshing,yetsuchpotentialendsupbeingundercut,foralthoughtherearestillrefreshingelementstotheartisticvalueofthisfilm,thisnarrativeoffersonlysomuchthatfeelsnewenoughtoobscurepredictability,thusmakingforafilmthatalmostfrustratinglystandstobemorerefreshing,oratleastmoreeveninitsnarrative.Thefilmpresentstwostoriesthatrelyoneachotheraskeyelementstotheirindividualprogressions,yetratherthangoingtheregularrouteofhavingaframestoryaroundacorenarrativethattakesupthebodyofthefinalproduct,thisdramaconceptuallypaysequalrespecttoitstwo-sidedstory,andthatwouldbegreatandallifthedramareallywasmoreconsistentlysuccessfulinitsattemptsatcoherency,foralthoughthemarriageofanear-brutallyrealistdrama"frame"storyandsweepinglycolorfulfantasystoryissurprisinglygenerallyorganic,distancingfocalunevennesscanbefoundwithinareasofunequalattentiontothetwosidesofthestory,whichhaveenoughstructureproblemsbytheirownrights.The"reality"story,whilecompelling,istoominimalisttobeallthatintriguinglydynamic,andthe"fantasy"story,whilelively,feelstoostorybookinitsstructure,inthatitslam-bangsalongandoftenevenchancesitsownrulesforconvenience'ssake,atleastwhenit'snotgettingatouchtoocarriedawaywithitsstyle,tothepointofindulgence.Eitherway,thetellingofthe"fantasy"sideofthenarrativeismessy,andthetellingofthe"reality"sideisn'ttoomuchmorerealized,sostorytellingmishapsoftenbetraythefullkickofpromisingsubjectmatter,whichislimitedinthefirstplacebynaturalshortcomings,ofwhichtherearen'texactlyenoughforyoutonotseeawaytomakeastrongfilm,butenoughtodrivebystrengthifsupportedbystorytellingmissteps,aswellastouchtoomuchofadesiretomakeastrongfilm.Asyoucanimagine,thisbigartisticeffortbyTarsemSinghishighlyambitious,andIrespectSinghforhisheart,especiallyconsideringthatitsdesiresgofulfilledmoreoftenthannot,yetwhenambitionisnotfulfilled,theblamefallsheavyonSingh,whoseoverwhelmingheartinspirestheoccasionalsubtletyissue,andwhoseoftenfindingdifficultyinjugglingweightydramaticsubjectmatterwithfluffyartistryinspiresatonalunevennessthatthinsoutthekickofeithersideofapotentiallystrongstory.It'ssubtlemisstepsthatdrivethefinalproductshortofstrong,makenomistake,butthefactofthematteristhatproblemsstandasdifficulttoignore,becausenomatterhowwell-madethefilmisinalotofways,whenitfallsshortofitsambition,there'snogettingaroundtheproblemsthatultimatelyholdbackaneffortthatcouldhavegonequiteadistance.Nevertheless,thefilmgoesfarenoughtotrulyreward,atleastwhenitcomessubstance,whereaswhenitcomestostylisticartistry,thefinalproductmore-or-lessexcels. KrishnaLevy'sscoreisn'ttooterriblyoutstanding,yetitisstillprettystrong,boastingaclassicallytenderwhimsythatisbothbeautifulandcomplimentarytotone,muchlikeColinWatkinson'sarguablyjustas,maybeevenmoreoutstandingcinematography,whodoesgorgeousjusticetoTarsemSingh'strademarkvisualstylewithwarmcolorandanear-magicaltasteinlightingthatareconsistentlyhandsome,withstunningmomentsthatstandoutthemostwhentheygobackedbyother,perhapsevenmoreremarkableelementstovisualartistry.Thefilmwasshotinmultiplelovelylocations,everyoneofwhichhadtheirownpersonalartdirector,-withtheSouthAfricanlocationsbeinghandledbyLisaHart,whileSonalSawanthandledtheIndianlocationsandCynthiaSleiterhandledtheItalianlocations-allofwhomdeliverremarkably,especiallyinthebuildingofthe"fantasy"story'sspectacularworld,whichisbroughttolifebylavishproductionandcostumedesigns,punchedupbylivelyspecialeffects,andallarounduniqueinawaythatisnotsimplybeautiful,butimmersive.Whetheritbebecausetherearemomentsofstyle-over-substance,orbecauseofwhatever,stylecouldverywellbestrongerthanthesubstance,whichisn'ttosaythatthat'sabadthing,asthescore,cinematographyandartdirectionaretrulyoutstanding,somuchsothatifyouseethisfilmfornootherreason,seeitfortheeyecandy,butdon'tgiveuphopeofseeingmeatalongwiththesweet(Yeah,thatwasacheesyrhyme,butwhatever),asthepatientwillbeabletofindstrongsubstance.Therearenaturalshortcomings,sure,butthisfilm'sstoryconceptismostundercutbyhiccupsinexecution,becauseonpaper,thisisaprettystrongstory,withfantasyelementsthatmaybekindofmessyinalotofways,butarecolorfulandimaginative,withintriguingconnectionstoamorerealistnarrativethatisjustascompelling,beingasubtlyweightycharacterdrama,anchoredbyheavythemesonfearandthecrushingdistinctionsbetweenfantasyandreality,aswellasbyastrongcast.LeoBill,RobinSmith,JeetuVermaandMarcusWesleyareallcharismaticasthefantasycharacters,buttherealonscreendrivingforcesaretheleads,withCatincaUntaruendearingasaninnocentyounggirlwhosewondermentoverafantasyworldshallbechallengedbycrushingrealism,whileLeePaceprovestobealmostshow-stealinglyeffectiveinhisportrayalofaseeminglygoodandcaringmanwhoistrulymostinterestedinfindingawaytoescapehispain,evenifitmeansexploringthehard,selfishway,sotheonscreenleadscertainlycompel,yetit'stheoffscreenleadwhobringsthefilmtolife,assurelyasheholdsthefilmbackabit.TarsemSingh'sdirectorialperformanceisoverambitious,withquestionablestorytellingattributes,butstillprettyinspired,havingacertainlivelinessanddramaticheartthatkeeptoomuchslownessatbay,andconsistentlycompel,maybeevenmoveattimes.Thisisaveryengagingdrama,withverystronghighlights,andwhilesuchhighlightsaretoofewandfarbetweenforthefinalproducttobegenerallystrong,thefilmneverslipssofarastoitsheart,whichiskeptpumpingenoughbyremarkableartistryandinspiredsubstancetobringarewardingfinalproducttolife.
