PamelaHowardhasdesignedthisdevisedartworkworkshopforemergingdesignersandstudentparticipants;inspiredbyElGreco’spainting“ThePlanandViewofToledo’andwritingsfromtheperiodthroughtoday.Theartworkwillexplore‘theuniversalityofdisplacement’,lookingatimmigration/refugeesandhowartgivesthedispossessedtheabilitytotriumphovertheirpersonalcircumstances. Knownforherplayfuldrawingtechniques,Pamelawillmentorstudentswhowillworkinteamsoftwotoapplyhermethodsofimagecreationthatsynchronizecolour,soundandword.Participantswillpaint,sketchandcollageonesectionofatwometrehighbysixtymetrelongassemblagedioramathatwillprovideacontinuousnarrativeaboutimmigration,identity,events,andancestry.Eachteamwillberesponsibleforbuildinganimagethatillustratesapartofthestory,buttheymustalsoaddresstransitionsfromthepanelsbeforeandafter,requiringhighlycollaborativeskills.Simultaneously,asmallgroupofmusicianswillberehearsingamusicalscorethatwillintegratewiththevisualstorytelling. PortraitdrawnbyHeatherBowing WHATistheTHEATREofTOMORROW?Jean-GuyLecat–WSD2022LivingLegends PANELDESCRIPTION: Overthelasttwoyears,theatreartistshaveenduredthepandemicwhilemostofthetheatresandoperaswereclosed.Theatresproducedsomeworkdigitallyontheinternetandothersofferedoldproductionsfromtheirfilmedarchivethroughtheirlocalnetworks.EverySundayIsawabeautifulplaymadebyFrenchComedieFrancaiseonthenationalchannel. Atthatpoint,mostofthetheatresclosedforthefirsttime,andmanyartistsandtechnicianslosttheirjobs.AtthattimeIrealizedthattheatreingeneralmayhavereachedaturningpointandthatitsfuturewillcertainlyneedtobedifferent. Thewaywearecreatingtheatrehastochangefortwo2reasons:ecologyandfinancing.Performanceandthespacestheyexistinneedtotransform.Howcanwereconsidertheecologyandfinancialmeansofproducingtheatreandoperatoadapttonewwaysofperformancecreation? PRESENTER: Jean-GuyLecat Jean-GuyLecat Jean-Guywasthetechnicaldirector,decoratorandscenographerforPeterBrookattheThéâtredesBouffesduNordforovertwentyfiveyears.Todayhecontinueshispracticeofasafreelancescenographerandtheatrearchitectureconsultant.Sincethebeginningofhiscareer,hehasalwayskeptonefootintheatreandtheotherfootinarchitecture.In2007,LecatcreatedhisinnovativeCardboardBoxTheatreatPQ,hisinterpretationofatemporarytheatrespaceusingfiberglassfilledboxesfortheiracousticalqualities.BecauseofLecat’s40-yearexperienceinmakingoverdilapidatedwarehouses,abandonedfactoriesandmonasteriesintoviableperformancespaces—becauseofhisimmensebodyofknowledgeintheusesofscenography,thehistoryofdesign,theimportanceofgoodacousticsand,mostsignificant,therelationshipofactortoaudience—Lecatisconsideredaworldleaderinthefieldoftheatreanddesign.
