IfI’mlucky(notoften)somethingmightbesaidwhichfinallyturnsonthelightbulbinmybrainandallowsmetojointheconversation.HowevermoreoftenthannotI’mforcedtoquicklyendourdialogueandgetawaybeforeI’mexposed. Whatisbecomingmoreapparentispeoplelikelyconfusemybrevitywithrudenessandthatbothersme.MywifeJanehasanissuewiththewayIhandlethesesituationsespeciallyifI’minapositionwhereIdon’tintroduceherbecauseIdon’tknowtheotherperson’sname. ShebelievesthatcommoncourtesywouldbeformetoadmitthatIhaveforgottentheirnameandofferanapologylike,“I’msorrybutIhaveforgottenyourname.”She’sright…andwrong. Thatsituationworksfinewhenit’ssomeoneyoumighthavemetonceortwicebutwhatifit’sapersonthatyoureallyshouldremembermaybeevensomeonewhoisfairlyimportant.Theycouldtakerealexceptiontothefactyoucouldnotremembertheirnameanditmightbeaninsultthatresultsinnegativeconnotations. Iwilladmittobeingontheotherendofthisandwalkingawayfeelinginsignificantwhenapersondidnotremembermeormyname.Bottomline. IfI’vehadanencounterinwhichIcameoffassomewhatrudeitwaslikelyduetothefactthatIwasuncomfortablebecauseIsimplycouldnotplaceyournamewithyourface.
