TheoriginalSoochowUniversitywasfoundedbyMethodistsinSuzhou(thenspelledasSoochow)in1900asamergerofthreeexistinginstitutions:thePo-hsiAcademy,theKung-hsiangAcademy,andtheChung-hsiAcademy. Theuniversitywassplitin1949asaresultoftheChineseCivilWar.TheSoochowUniversityonthemainlandmergedwiththeSouthernJiangsuCollegeofCultureandEducationandtheDepartmentofMathematicsandPhysicsatJiangnanUniversitytoformtheJiangsuTeacher'sCollegein1952.TheEnglishnameSoochowUniversitywasrevivedonthemainlandin1982whentheJiangsuTeacher'sCollegemergedwiththeSuzhouCollegeofSericulture,theSuzhouInstituteofSilkTextileTechnology,andtheSuzhouMedicalCollege.However,theoriginalChinesenameDongwuwasnotadoptedandthenewinstitutionwasgiventhenameSuzhou. AfterfleeingtoTaiwanin1949,membersoftheSoochowAlumniAssociationreestablishedtheSoochowUniversity,startingwithitsCollegeofLawin1951andbecomingafull-fledgeduniversitywithfiveschoolsin1971.TheuniversityinTaiwan,claiminghistoricalcontinuitywiththeuniversityonthemainland(pre-1949),thususestheDongwuname.
