Symptomsofpanicdisorder AnxietyAnxietyisafeelingofunease.Itcanrangefrommildtosevere,andcanincludefeelingsofworryandfear.Panicisthemostsevereformofanxiety.Youmaystarttoavoidcertainsituationsbecauseyoufearthey'lltriggeranotherattack.Thiscancreateacycleofliving"infearoffear".Itcanaddtoyoursenseofpanicandmaycauseyoutohavemoreattacks.PanicattacksDuringapanicattack yougetarushofintensementalandphysicalsymptoms.Itcancomeonveryquicklyandfornoapparentreason.Apanicattackcanbeveryfrighteninganddistressing.Symptomsinclude:aracingheartbeatfeelingfaintsweatingnauseachestpainshortnessofbreathtremblinghotflusheschillsshakylimbsachokingsensationdizzinessnumbnessorpinsandneedlesdrymouthaneedtogotothetoiletringinginyourearsafeelingofdreadorafearofdyingachurningstomachatinglinginyourfingersfeelinglikeyou'renotconnectedtoyourbodyMostpanicattackslastbetween5and20minutes.Somehavebeenreportedtolastuptoanhour.Thenumberofattacksyouhavewilldependonhowsevereyourconditionis.Somepeoplehaveattacksonceortwiceamonth,whileothershavethemseveraltimesaweek.Althoughpanicattacksarefrightening,they'renotdangerous.Anattackwillnotcauseyouanyphysicalharm,andit'sunlikelyyou'llbeadmittedtohospitalifyouhaveone.Beawarethatmostofthesesymptomscanalso besymptomsofotherconditionsorproblems,soyoumaynotalwaysbeexperiencingapanicattack.Forexample,youmayhavearacingheartbeatifyouhaveverylowbloodpressure. Whentogethelp SeeaGPifyou'vebeenexperiencingsymptomsofpanicdisorder.They'llaskyoutodescribeyoursymptoms,howoftenyougetthem,andhowlongyouhavehadthem.Theymayalsocarryoutaphysicalexaminationtoruleoutotherconditionsthatcouldbecausingyoursymptoms.Itcansometimesbedifficulttotalkaboutyourfeelings,emotionsandpersonallife,buttrynottofeelanxiousorembarrassed.Youmaybediagnosedwithpanicdisorderifyouhaveregularandunexpectedpanicattacksfollowedbyatleastamonthofcontinuousworryorconcernabouthavingfurtherattacks. Treatmentsforpanicdisorder Treatmentaims toreducethenumberofpanicattacksyouhaveandeaseyoursymptoms.Talkingtherapiesandmedicinearethemaintreatmentsforpanicdisorder.Yourtreatmentwilldependonyoursymptoms. PsychologicaltherapiesYoucanreferyourselfdirectlytoapsychologicaltherapiesservicefortreatmentbasedoncognitivebehaviouraltherapy(CBT). Findapsychologicaltherapiesservice(Englandonly) Ifyouprefer,youcanseeaGPandtheycanreferyou.Yourtherapistmaydiscusswithyouhowyoureactwhenyouhaveapanicattackandwhatyouthinkabout.Theycanteachyouwaysofchangingyourbehaviourtohelpyoukeepcalmduringanattack.YoumayneedtoseeyourGPregularlywhileyou'rehavingCBTsotheycanassessyourprogress.MedicineIfyouandyourdoctorthinkitmightbehelpful,youmaybeprescribed:atypeofantidepressantcalledaselectiveserotoninreuptakeinhibitor(SSRI)or,ifSSRIsarenotsuitable,atricyclicantidepressant(usuallyimipramineorclomipramine)ananti-epilepsymedicinesuchaspregabalin or,ifyouranxietyissevere,clonazepam(thesemedicinesarealsobeneficialfortreatinganxiety)Antidepressantscantake2to4weeksbeforetheystarttowork,andupto8weekstoworkfully.Keeptakingyourmedicines,evenifyoufeelthey'renotworking,andonlystoptakingthemifyourGPadvisesyoutodoso.ReferraltoaspecialistIfyoursymptomsdonotimproveafterCBT,medicineandconnectingwithasupportgroup,yourGPmayreferyoutoamentalhealth specialistsuchasapsychiatristorclinicalpsychologist.Thespecialistwillcarryoutanassessmentanddeviseatreatmentplantohelpyoumanageyoursymptoms.
