In1927,BricoenteredtheBerlinStateAcademyofMusicandin1929graduatedfromitsmasterclassinconducting,thefirstAmericantodoso.DuringthatperiodshewasalsoapupilofKarlMuck,conductoroftheHamburgPhilharmonicOrchestra,withwhomshestudiedforafurtherthreeyearsaftergraduation.[2] Career[edit] FollowingherdebutasaprofessionalconductorwiththeBerlinPhilharmonicOrchestrainFebruary1930,BricoworkedwiththeSanFranciscoSymphonyandtheHamburgPhilharmonic,winningplauditsfromcriticsandthepublic.AppearancesasguestconductoroftheMusicians'SymphonyOrchestrainDetroit,Washington,D.C.andothersitessoonfollowed.In1934,shewasappointedconductorofthenewlyfoundedWomen'sSymphonyOrchestrawhich,inJanuary1939(followingtheadmissionofmen),becametheBricoSymphonyOrchestra.[2] InJuly1938,BricowasthefirstwomantoconducttheNewYorkPhilharmonic,andin1939conductedtheFederalOrchestrainconcertsatthe1939NewYorkWorld'sFair.[7]DuringanextensiveEuropeantour,inwhichsheappearedbothasapianistandaconductor,BricowasinvitedbyJeanSibeliustoconducttheHelsinkiSymphonyOrchestra.[7] BricosettledinDenver,Coloradoin1942.[2]HereshefoundedaBachSocietyandtheWomen'sStringEnsemble.[7]ShealsoconductedtheDenverBusinessmen'sOrchestra,whichin1968becametheBricoSymphonyOrchestra,andin1948shebecameconductoroftheDenverCommunitySymphony(latertheDenverPhilharmonic).[8]ShewasconductoroftheBoulderPhilharmonicOrchestrafrom1958-1963.[9][10]ShetaughtpianoorconductingtosuchstudentsasJudyCollins,DonaldLoach,JamesErbandKarlosMoser.[2]Bricocontinuedtoappearasguestconductorwithorchestrasaroundtheworld,includingtheJapanWomen'sSymphony.[7] AdocumentaryfilmaboutBrico'slife,entitledAntonia:APortraitoftheWoman,bydirectorJillGodmilow,withhelpfromBrico'sformerstudentJudyCollins,appearedin1974.Init,Bricocandidlydescribedhercareer-longstrugglewithgenderbiasthatkeptherfromconductingmorefrequently.ThefilmwasnominatedforanAcademyAwardforBestDocumentaryFeatureanditspopularitywaspartiallyresponsibleforinvitationsforBricotoconducttheMostlyMozartFestivalOrchestrainsold-outconcertsrecordedbyColumbiaRecordsin1975,andtheBrooklynPhilharmoniain1977.[11] Deathandlegacy[edit] Bricodiedin1989afteralongillnessattheageof87.ShehadlivedattheBellaVitaTowers,anursinghomeinDenversince1988.[7] HistoryColorado,formerlytheColoradoHistoricalSociety,holdsalargecollectionofherpersonalpapers.ShewasinductedintotheColoradoWomen'sHallofFamein1986.[12] DutchdirectorMariaPeters'movieDeDirigent('TheConductor')aboutthelifeofBrico,starringChristannedeBruijnasAntoniaBrico,wasreleasedin2018.[13] Children'spicturebook'InOneEarAndOutTheOther:AntoniaBricoAndHerAmazinglyMusicalLife'byDianeWortheyandillustratedbyMorganaWallacewaspublishedbyPennyCandyBooksin2020.[14]ThebookisaJuniorLibraryGuildGoldStandardSelection.
