Pages Home Thinkers Topics ArticleSummaries BookSummaries Explained&Defined Thursday,January4,2018 Locutionary,Illocutionary,PerlocutionarySpeechActs According toAustin(1962)inhisspeechactstheory,therearethreeactionsrelatedto speechacts.Thefirstactislocutionaryactwhichisthebasicproductionof meaningfulutterance.Thisactismuchrelatedtothehearer,ifthehearer failstounderstandwhatthespeakerissayingthenthespeakerhasfailedto doalocutionaryact.Forexample,whenapersonfromIndonesia(he'sin Americaforinstance)talkstoanAmericaninbahasa'apakabarpak?'in Englishthisutterancewillnotproducewhatiscalledasameaningfullinguistic expression.Onthecontrarywhenthespeakersaid'howareyousir?'thenthe Americanwouldunderstandanditisaformoflocutionaryact.(seemoresimpleexamplesof locutionaryacts) In utteringasentenceorword,onemusthaveacertainintention.Mostofthe timepeopleproducewell-formedutterancesforapurpose,forinstancetheneed tocommunicatesomethingtosomeoneortoprovidefacts.Thisseconddimension iscalledIllocutionaryact.Anillocutionaryactisaccomplishedviautterance withacommunicativeintention.Aspeakermayperformillocutionaryacttomake apromise,offer,explanation,etc,whichisasproposedbyAustinas illocutionaryforce.(seemoreexamplesof illocutionaryacts) In indicatingillocutionaryactSearledevelopsadevicecalledIllocutionary ForceIndicatingDevice(IFID). Itisan expressiontoshowtheillocutionaryforceofanutteranceis.Forexample,in theutterance [1.5] ‘Ipromiseyouthis’ The word‘promise’in[1.5]isidentifiedasperformativeverbwhichisoneofthe devicestoidentifyillocutionaryforce.Itisobviouslyindicatedthatthe illocutionaryforceofthespeakeristopromisesomethingtothehearerasthe speakerdescribesitexplicitly.Sometimesonedoesn’texplicitlymentiontheir intentionexplicitly.WhenthishappensanotherIFIDcanbeusedtoidentifythe illocutionaryforceofthespeaker.Thesearewordorders,intonations,and stresses. Intheseutterancescan beindicatedthattheillocutionaryforceof[1.6a]istotellormakedecision, while[1.6b]isrequestingconfirmationand[1.6c]isaskingaboutthe hearer’sactivityinthenearfuture(emphasizinginwordorderdifference). Whilelocutionaryactistheactionofmakinga meaningfulutteranceandillocutionaryactisperforminganintentional utterance,perlocutionaryacttalksaboutproducingtheeffectofthe meaningful,intentionalutterance.Whilemakingutterancethatintenttomake someonetodrinkcoffeeissuccessfullyperformed,theeffectisthatsomeone actuallydrankthecoffeeisalsoknownasperlocutionaryeffect.Another exampleiswhenaboysaystoagirl“You’rebeautiful”,ifthegirlis attractedtotheboyusuallythegirlwillblushandfeelhappy;butonthe contrary,ifthegirlisnotattractedtothespeaker,thenusuallyshewill onlysay“Thankyou”anddon’tfeelashappyasinthefirstcase.(moreexamplesof perlocutionaryacts). In conclusion,locutionaryactistheproductionofmeaningfulutterancesandexpressions (“goaway!”,“comehere”,“whoareyou?”,etc)whichleadstoillocutionary act,theintentionofproducingmeaningfulexpression(promise,offering,etc), whichcausestheperformanceofperlocutionaryact,whichistheeffectofthe locutionaryandillocutionaryact(behavior,feeling,belief,etc).
