Titled"‘WeAreTaiwanese’:China’sGrowingMenaceHardensIsland’sIdentity,"reportersAmyQinandAmyChangChienexploredthewaysTaiwanesesocietyhasevolvedoverthedecadesbyinterviewingmembersofafamilythatrepresentstwoverydifferentgenerationsinTaiwan.LiYuan-hsin,a36-year-oldhighschoolteachertypifiestheyoungergenerationthatconsidersthemselvestobedistinctlyTaiwanese,whileher82-year-oldgrandmotherWangYu-lanrepresentsanoldergenerationofKuomintang(KMT)thatstillthinksofthemselvesasChinese. Althoughtheancestorsofover90%ofTaiwanesecitizensarrivedinTaiwanfromChinaatsomepointinthepast300years,mostthinkofthemselvesashavingauniqueidentitythatisseparatefromChina.TheauthorspointoutthatconstantpressurebytheChineseCommunistParty(CCP)tocompelTaiwantounitewithChinahasonlystiffenedTaiwaneseresolve. RecentsurveyshaveshownthatmostTaiwanesedonotwishtobeannexedbyChina,nordotheyseekformalindependenceduetothethreatofwar.WithChineseChairmanXiJinping(習近平)publiclymakingtheabsorptionofTaiwanatoppriorityforhislegacy,tensionsareattheirhighestinyearsashecontinuestointensifyapressurecampaigntoconvinceTaiwantocapitulate. WangrepresentstheoldguardwhofledChina70yearsagoandstillhasacloserculturalaffinitytoChina,havingfledtoTaiwanin1948inthemidstoftheChineseCivilWar.ShestillretainsmanyaspectsofChineseculture,suchaspaintingChineseinklandscapesandplayingtheerhu,butwasindoctrinatedinanti-communistsloganssuchas“RecapturethemainlandfromtheCommunistbandits!” Li,whowasborninTaiwan,insiststhatsheisTaiwanese,andhascontinuedtogrowincreasinglywaryofChinaafteritscrackdowninHongKongandexclusionofTaiwanfromtheWHOduringthepandemic.TheauthorspointedoutthatLirepresentsthe62.3%ofcitizenswhoconsiderthemselvesTaiwanese,asopposedto31.7%whothinkofthemselvesasChineseinthelatestElectionStudyCenterpoll,adramaticshiftfrom17.6%selectingTaiwaneseand46.4%optingforChinesein1992.
