Thereportisthefifthintheseriesandincludessurveyresultsandacollectionofarticlesfromglobalindustryexperts,aswellasaforewordfromDrLeslieMcIntosh,CEOofRipetaandExecutiveDirector,Emeritus–ResearchDataAllianceUS. The StateofOpenData isnowthelongestrunninglongitudinalstudyonthesubject,whichwascreatedin2016,toexamineattitudesandexperiencesofresearchersworkingwithopendata–sharingit,reusingit,andredistributingit. Thisyear’ssurveyreceivedaround4,500responsesfromtheresearchcommunityandhadanadditionalfocusonresearchpracticesinthewakeoftheCOVID-19pandemic.Itaskedresearchershowthepandemicwasimpactingtheirabilitytocarryoutresearch,andtheirviewsonreuseofdataandcollaboration. KeyCOVID-19findingsinclude: Athird(32%)ofacademicresearchersreportedthattheirresearchhadbeen‘extremely’or‘very’impactedbytheoutbreakofCOVID-19.ThedisciplinesaffectedmostbyCOVID-19werethoseworkinginChemistry(47%),Biology(39%),Medicine(36%)andMaterialsScience(36%).ThelowestlevelofimpactwasreportedinHumanitiesandSocialSciences(20%)43%ofthosesurveyedhavealreadyorarelikelytorepurposetheirgranttosomeextentforCOVID-19researchLockdownisseenbyhalfofrespondentsas‘extremely’or‘somewhat’likelytoresultinre-useofopendataprovidedbyotherlabs,and65%expecttoreusetheirowndata.MorethanathirdofresearcherssaytheyexpecttoseemorecollaborationasaresultofCOVID-19;forthoseincountrieslikeBrazilandIndiawheretheimpactofCOVID-19onresearchappearssignificant,aroundhalfexpectcollaborationtoincreaseasaresult. Otherkeyreportfindings: Thenumberofrespondentswhonevermakeadatamanagementplanhalvedfrom30%to15%In2018,60%ofrespondentshadneverheardoftheFAIRprinciples,thisyearthatnumberwasdownto39%andtheoverallfamiliarityhasincreasedfrom15%to24%.55%ofrespondentsfeltthatsharingdatashouldbeapartoftherequirementsforawardinggrants29%ofrespondentsdonotknowwhowouldcoverthecostsofmakingtheirresearchdataopenaccessOnly13%ofrespondentsfeltthatresearcherscurrentlygetsufficientcreditforsharingdatawith59%feelingtheyreceivedtoolittlecredit.
