Therelationshipbetweenyouandyourclientisconsideredtobecentraltounderstandingparticularpsychologicaldifficultiesandhowtheyapplytothem. Tohelprecognisetherelationshipbetweenpersonaldevelopmentandprofessionalpractice,youwillberequiredtohavepersonaltherapyasaclient aspartof your trainingandcontinuedprofessionaldevelopment.  Therelationshipbetweenyouandyourclientisconsideredtobecentraltounderstandingparticularpsychologicaldifficulties. WhowillIworkwith? Youwillworkwithindividuals,(children,youngpeople,adultsandolderadults),couples,families,withgroupsandatanorganisationalandcommunitylevel. WherewillIwork?  WorkingwithintheNHSasacounsellingpsychologist, you'll work in: mentalhealth services GPsurgeries hospitals  otherhealthsettings Youcouldalso workinacademia,teaching,socialjustice,advocacyorresearchinyourareaofexpertise. Entryrequirements Toenteracounsellingpsychologytraining programme,youwillneedeitheranundergraduateorMaster’sdegreethatisaccreditedbytheBritishPsychologicalSociety(BPS)andleadsto graduatemembership.Aswellasthis,youwillneedsomeexperienceworkingwithadultsorchildren.  Toqualify,counsellingpsychologistscompletea HealthandCareProfessionsCouncil-accreditedpractitionerdoctoraldegree,whichrequireatleast450hoursofsupervisedcounsellingpracticeoverthreeormoreyears.Thesehoursshouldbeundertakeninavarietyofsettings.Traineesarealsorequiredtoreceivepersonaltherapyduringtraining.   Payandconditions MostjobsintheNHSarecoveredbytheAgendaforChange(AfC)payscales.Thispaysystemcoversallstaffexceptdoctors,dentistsandthemostseniormanagers.  Aftercompletingtheirtraining,counsellingpsychologistswillbepaidatband7,with some opportunitiestoprogresstohigherbandslaterintheircareer. PsychologistsintheNHSworkfullorparttime.TermsandconditionscanvaryforemployersoutsideoftheNHS.  Wheretherolecanlead Onceyouhavequalifiedasacounsellingpsychologist,thereisawiderangeofopportunities.WithfurtherexperienceyoucouldqualifyfortheRegisterofPsychologistsSpecialisinginpsychotherapyorbecomeaclinicalsupervisor.Youcouldapplyformoreseniorpositionse.g.headofapsychologyserviceorconsultantpsychologist.Aspsychologyreliesheavilyonresearch,youcouldcontributetothedevelopmentoftheprofessionthroughresearchworkandteaching.Youcouldapplyforatraineehighintensitytherapistposition,enablingyoutoworkundertheImprovingAccesstoPsychologicalTherapiesinitiative(IAPT).
