In2000,Cramco-foundedinternationalchildren’scharityCOCO(ComradesofChildrenOverseas)withBritishArmyMajorJimPantonafterrunningtheBosniaComradesultramarathonin1998.CramremainschairmanofCOCO,anorganisationwhichcurrentlyprovideseducationtochildrenlivinginpoor,remotepartsofEastAfrica.[5] In2008,CramwasappointedChancelloroftheUniversityofSunderland,replacingLordPuttnam,[6][7]andin2009waselectedasPresidentofJarrow&HebburnAthleticsClub.[8] Cramnowworksasatelevisionpresenterandathleticscommentator,motivationalspeakerandathleticscoach.In2021,hewaselectedasthenewpresidentoftheBritishOrienteeringFederation.[9][10] Contents 1Athleticscareer 2Televisioncareer 3Personallife 4Awards 5Personalbests 6References 7Externallinks Athleticscareer[edit] In1980,CramwonhisplaceintheBritishOlympicteamafterfinishingin2ndplacetoSteveOvettinthemileatCrystalPalace.Theracehadbeenmarkedasarun-offbetweenCramandScottishmilerGrahamWilliamsonforthefinalplace(aselectiondecisionwhichwasseverelycriticisedbyOvettinhis1984autobiography).Cram,aged19,reachedthefinalofthe1,500matthe1980MoscowOlympicGames,inwhichOvettandSebastianCoefamouslyviedforthegoldmedal.Cramfinishedineighthplace.[11] CapitalisingonhisOlympicexperience,Crammadehismajorbreakthroughin1982,ayearinwhichCoeandOvettwerelargelyabsentwithinjuries.Cramtook1,500mgoldattheCommonwealthGamesandalsothe1982EuropeanChampionshipsinAthens,whereheracedtogoldafterbreakingfromthefieldwith600metrestogofollowingWilliamson'sfall. InjuryhaddisruptedCramintheearlypartofthe1983season,butherecoveredintimeforthe1983WorldChampionshipsinHelsinkiandjustpriortothegamesbeatCoe(whowassufferingfromanundiagnosedvirusatthetime)inan800matGateshead.Inaslowfinal,hestrategicallybeatalargefieldfollowingSaïdAouita'sbreakwith500metrestogo.Ovettbecametrappedinthepack,ultimatelyfinishingfourth,whileCramoutkickedSteveScottandAouitainthelast200metres.InaremarkmadeinCram'spresenceshortlyafterwardswhichspoketothedepthofBritishmilers,OvettnotedthatBritainwasthehomeoftheOlympicchampion,WorldchampionandWorldRecordholderinthe1,500m-titlesheldbyCoe,CramandOvettrespectively. AtCrystalPalacelaterthatsummer,Cramwonanepicmilerace,inwhichheledOvettbylittlemorethanametrewith300metrestogoandmaintainedthatleadrighttothefinishingline.Ina2006interview,Cramdescribedtherace:"Itwasacat-and-mouseaffair-webothstartedoffrunningatthebackofthefield.Ibeathimbylittlemorethanthethicknessofavest."[12] In1984,Cram'sseasonwasseverelyhamperedbyinjury,althoughherecoveredsufficientlytowinsilverinthe1,500matthe1984OlympicGamesinLosAngeles,behinddefendingchampionCoe. Hecamebackstrongerin1985,ayearinwhichhewasonlybeatenthreetimes;byCoeat800m,McKeanat800mandOvettinaroadMile.Inthe800m,nothisbestevent,hebeatthereigning800mOlympicChampion,JoaquimCruz,in1:42.88,thefastesttimehewasevertorun,offevensplitsof51.2&51.7.Hebrokethreeworldrecords(1,500m,Mile,2,000m)withina19-dayspan,[13]andrecordedaBritishAllComersRecordoverthe1,000m,running2:12.88inwindyconditionsatGateshead(thesecondfastest1,000minhistoryatthetimebehindCoe's2:12.18).Hewasthefirstmantorununder3:30.00forthe1,500m,justbeatingSaïdAouitainNice(running3:29.67toAouita's3:29.71).Hismiletimeof3:46.32,recordedattheBislettStadiuminOslo,stoodforeightyearsand,asof2021[update],isstilltheEuropeanrecord.ThisrunwasnotableforthefactthatthiswasanactualcompetitiveraceagainstSebastianCoewiththefirstthreelapsbeingbelowschedule,althoughprettyeveninpacedistribution(57.2,57.3,58.7),followedbyanexceptionallastlap(440yds)of53.2. WhilethelikesofCoeandOvetthadadevastatingsprintfinishoverthelast100metres,Cramtendedtowindupthespeedgraduallyoverthelast300metresofraces,makinghimverydifficulttocatch.However,duringthe1985seasonhesaid(andindeeddemonstrated)thathecouldwinfromanypositionandhappilyrannearthebackofworldclassfieldsbeforeunleashinghiskick,oftenwithalaporsotogo.Thistactic,hiselegant,highsteppingactionandhiseffortlessaccelerationmadehimoneofthemostexcitingmiddledistancerunnerstowatch. Cram'sgoodformcontinuedintothe1986season.Atthe1986CommonwealthGamesinEdinburgh,hewonthe800m,finishing15metresclearofTomMcKeanandPeterElliottin1:43:22-stilltheCommonwealthGamesrecord.Hefollowedthisupwithgoldinthe1,500mandwaspersuadedtorunbotheventsatthe1986EuropeanChampionshipsinStuttgart.HearrivedattheEuropeanChampionships"justovertheedge"ashesuggestedinDavidMiller'sbiographyofCoe,"BorntoRun".Nevertheless,hewonthebronzeinthe800mhavingbeenblockeddownthebackstraightbyTomMcKeanwhomadehisrunatthesametimeasCramand,thoughleadingintothestraight,lackedthezestheshowedintheCommonwealthgamesandwasunabletoholdoffthechallengesofMcKeanandasuperlativeCoe.Althoughdisappointedbyhis800mdefeatCrambouncedbacktobeatCoetothegoldmedalinthe1,500m.ItturnedouttobenotonlyCram'slastmajormedal,buttheendofthegoldeneraforBritishmiddledistancerunning. In1987,hewasnolongertheoutstanding1,500mathletethathehadbeeninpreviousyears.Havingpreviouslybeenabletowinracesfromanypositionandatanypace,hewasnowlackingconfidenceinhisfinishingspeed,anareainwhichhehadfallenbehindsomeofhismainrivals.HewasbeatenbyJoséLuisGonzálezintheEuropeanCup,andalthoughhefollowedthatwithanimpressivewininthe1,000minStockholm,andwontheDreamMileforthethirdyearrunning,hefinishedeighthafterleadingintothefinalbendofthe1987WorldChampionshipsfinalinRome.Hehadsaidbeforetheracethathisonlyhopeofvictorywasafastrace,inwhichhecouldrunthefinishoutofhisopponents,inparticularAbdiBile,theeventualwinner.UnhappilyforCram,thepacewasslow,andhefadedbadlyinthelast100metres. His1988seasonsawhimreturntobetterformandhebeatBileintheOsloDreamMilein1988-hisfourthconsecutivevictoryinthatrace.HavingrunimpressivelyintheOlympictrialsover800mandwinningin1:44.16,(openingupaneight-metregapoverTomMcKeaninasprintdownthehomestraight)hewastoutedasoneofthefavouritestowinthegoldmedalover1,500mattheSeoulOlympicsin1988untilacalfinjuryjustbeforethegamesina1000mracehamperedhisprogress.Theinjuryaffectedhisperformanceatthegamesandhewaseliminatedintheheatsofthe800m.Herecoveredsufficientlytoreachthefinalofthe1,500m,butcouldfinishonlyfourthinacloseracesurprisinglywonbyPeterRono.
