於2005年4月23日晚上8點27分（UTC）上傳，上傳者則是創辦人賈德·卡林姆使用的YouTube帳號「jawed」[1][2][3][4][5]。

這部影片是由雅科夫·拉皮茨基在美國加州的聖地牙哥動物園拍攝，內容是站在大象展示區前的卡林姆，長度只有19秒鐘，沒有特殊內容[6][7]，但卻象徵了數位網路的一個新開始[8]。

截至2021年11月23日 (2021-11-23)[update]為止，「我在動物園」的累計觀看人次已突破2億次，留言數量達到約1101萬條[9]。

2013年更新了影片敘述，還在畫面上方增加了紅色的註解方塊。

2021年11月，YouTube實踐隱藏踩評政策時，賈德在自己的第一影片《我在動物園》增加描述：「當全部YouTuber都贊同去除踩評是一個愚蠢的想法時，這（隱藏踩評想法）可能會是愚蠢的。
