Well,asrealisticasashowaboutghostscanbe. OurstorycentersaroundroutineinteractionsbetweenHibiki,ourmaincharacter,andvariousspiritsaroundtown.Emphasison"routine,"becauseHibikigreetsandconverseswiththesespiritsinthesame waythatshewouldtalkwithherhumanfriends,muchtothechagrinofsomecharacters... Alongtheway,weinevitablylearnofthebackgroundsofmanyoftheghosts,andthisiswherethe"surprisinglytouching"partcomesin.Eveninthisshow,deathisasombertopic,andasaresult,Re-Kan!oftenendsitsepisodeswithbitersweetrealizationsbylivinganddeadcharacterswhocanacceptthedeathofalovedoneandmoveonwiththeirlives.Itmadesittingthroughtherestoftheepisodeworthit,usually. Bythis,Iamreferringtothesillinessthattherestoftheshowisdominatedby.Theshowtendstofallbackonrunninggags,andthisinevitablyleadstomostofthejokesbeingratherpredictable.Agoodamountofthecharacters(Yamada,Yamada'sbrother,theEro-Neko)existsolelyforthepurposeofsilly,nonsensical,oroftenpervertedhumor.Asaresult,theyfunctionasthesubjectofragefromthemoreviolentcharacters,oroneswhoaresimplyfedupwiththeirantics.Andwhywouldn'ttheybe?Theirlinesarerepetitiveandtheirpresenceintheshowgetsstaleprettyearlyon. Whilesomeofthefemalecharacterssufferfromthesameissue,weatleastgettoseeamoreenjoyablerelationshipdevelopamongstthem.Theirbondsformprimarilythrough,youguessedit,Hbiki'sabilitytoseeghosts.Theirprogressionasfriendsissoslowit'salmostunseeable,butit'sjustanotheraspectoftheshow'sslow,easygoingnature.MaybeI'mjustsimple-minded,butseeingthosekindsofinteractionsiscuteandenjoyableforme. Particularly,theinteractionsbetweenHibikiandInoue,ourtokentsundere,areprettydarncute.TheirbiggestobstacleisthatInouecouldn'tbeaworsefriendforHibiki-she'sterrifiedofghosts!Despiteherfear,shesomehowgetsdraggedintoallofHibiki'sghostantics,andcomestoacceptHibikiassheis...forthemostpart.Also,it'sprettyobviousearlyonthatHibikihasacrushonInoue,soforallyouyurifansoutthere(myselfincluded),it'sanaddedbonus. Unfortunately,duetotheshow'sshortruntimeandepisodicnature,theusual"characters-don't-get-enough-development-or-screentime"problemisprevalenthere.Asonlyoneexample,Inoue'srelationshipwithHibikiiscute,butsheshowsnohintsofbreakingoutofhertsunderenaturebytheendoftheshow,whichisratherdisappointingconsideringhowmuchshe'schangedherattitudetowardsherfriends.Also,Iwouldhaveexpectedhertoatleasttrytoactlessterrifiedinthepresenceofghosts,butIhardlygotanyofthat.Therestofthehumanfemalecastgotoneepisodeofdevelopment,iftheywerelucky.I'mnotsureifa24-episodeserieswouldhavedraggedthisshowoutornot,butagain,13episodescertainlyisn'tenoughforeveryone. Instead,whatIgotweresituationswhereallIcouldthinkofwas"Aretheyreallygoingtospendtenminutesonthissubject?"Idon'tthinkIneededYamada'solderbrothertotalkabouthowmuchhelovesgirlsinswimsuitsfortenminutes,oraspiritthatjumpsoffofacliffeverydayforasillyreason,orazombie-lovinggirlrunningallovertownbecauseshehadapossessedzombiedoll.Iknowit'ssupposedtobeacomedy,butthesearemorecaseswherethecomedyeitherfellflatformeorwassosilly,allIcoulddowassigh. Theopeningsandendingsarecute...however,therewasanobviousdropinanimationqualitybetweentheopeningandtherestoftheshow.It'slike70%ofthebudgetwentintoanimatingtheopening,andtherestwentintotheactualcontent.Characterandbackgrounddesigns,whilecuteandcolorful,wereaverageatbestanddisappointinginthecontextoftheopening. Openingsandendingsaside,thesoundtrackisquiterelaxing.Iwasparticularlyfondoftheacoustic-centricinserts,anditemphasizedthe"slice-of-life"feelthatIamsoattractedto.
