Step1:EnterYourTerms
GototheEmbasehomepageandselectQuickSearch.
TypeanykeywordorphraseintotheSearchbox.Useanasterisk(*)toretrievevariationsonaword,e.g.,bacter*retrievesbacteria,bacterium,bacteriophage,etc.Asyouaddterms,thesearchbuttonwillshowthenumberofarticlesyoursearchwillpullup.
Youmayaddmoresearchtermsinadditionallines,adjustingtheirBooleanoperator(AND,OR,NOT)andfielddropdownmenuasneeded.
Ifdesired,limitthesearchbypublicationyear,dateenteredbyEmbase,orsometypesofpublication.Morelimiterswillbeavailableontheresultspage.
ForaSubjectSearch:LeavethedropdownmenuonQuickSearch.Enteroneormorewords(e.g.,asthmadrugtherapy)intheSearchbox.Embaseautomatically"ANDs"(combines)termstogethersothatalltermsorconceptsarepresent.SuggestionsforEmtreetermswillappearasyoutype,alongwiththenumberofarticlestaggedwiththatterm.TheQuickSearchwillsearchonyourwordorphraseasbothEmtreetermsandfreetext.
ForanAuthorSearch:Toretrievearticlesbyaparticularauthor,changethedropdownmenutoAuthorNameandentertheauthor'snameintheformatoflastnamefirstfollowedbyfirstinitial(e.g.,byrnesc),orusetheAuthorSearch
ForaJournalSearch:Toretrievearticlesfromaspecificjournal,changethedropdownmenutoJournalName,abbreviatedname,orISSNandenterthecorrespondinginformation,orusetheArticleSearch.
Step2:ClickontheSearchButtontoRunYourSearch
Step3:ViewYourResults
Atthetopoftheresultslistyouwillfindthenumberofresultsandseveraloptionsforviewingyourresults.Bydefault,resultsareshowninorderofpublicationyear.YoucanadjustthedisplayordertoshowresultsintheorderofhowwelltheymatchyoursearchaccordingtoEmbase'salgorithms,byauthor,orbydateenteredintoEmbase.CitationsaredisplayedinSummaryformat,upto25perpage.Youcanchangethedisplaytoincludeabstractsbyclicking'Showallabstracts'.Toincreasethenumberofcitationsperpage(upto200),scrolltothebottomofthepageandselectadifferentnumberinthe'Recordsperpage'dropdownmenu.
Step4:SetYourFilters
Atthetopandleftofyourresultspageyouwillseeoptionsforfilteringorlimitingyoursearch.UnlikeinPubMed,selectingafilterwillnotautomaticallyaffecttheresultsdisplayed.Forthefiltersontheleft,selectyourfiltersthenclickApply.Forthefiltersatthetop,selectyourfilterthenclicktheSearchbutton.Inbothcases,thefilterwillbeaddedtoyoursearchstringandthenewresultswillincorporatethatfilter.
CombiningSearches
Youmaycombineprevioussearchesbyclickingtheboxbesidethesearches,selectingANDorOR,thenclickingtheCombinebutton
oraddadditionaltermstoanexistingsearchbyclickingthesearchnumbertodisplayadditionaloptionstoaddthesearchtotheBuilderORusingthepoundsign(#)beforethesearchnumber,e.g.,#2AND#6or#3ANDdrugtherapyintheBuilderboxes.
