TheAQHIofthecurrenthouriscalculatedfromthesumofthepercentageaddedhealthriskofdailyhospitaladmissionsattributabletothe3-hourmovingaverageconcentrationsoffourcriteriaairpollutants:ozone,nitrogendioxide,sulphurdioxide,andparticulatematter(PM10 orPM2.5,whicheverhasahigherhealthrisk)measuredateachairqualitymonitoringstationoftheEPD. Theriskfactorsassociatedwitheachpollutantwerederivedfromlocalhealthstatisticsandairpollutiondata. TheAQHIsarereportedhourlyateachgeneralandroadsidemonitoringstationtokeepthepublicuptodateofthelatestairqualitysituation. Wealsoprovidethehealthriskcategoriesforecastwhichservestoalertthepublicbeforetheonsetofhighhealthriskcategoriesduetopollutionepisodes. WhattheAQHIInforms?TheAQHIestimatestheadditionalshort-termhealthriskcausedbyheartandrespiratorydiseasesfromairpollutionthatleadtohospitaladmissions. Itmakesreferencetotheshort-termWorldHealthOrganizationAirQualityGuidelinesasanchorpointstodefinethelevelwherehealthriskishighduetoshorttermexposuretoairpollution. TheAQHIsarereportedonascaleof1to10and10+andaregroupedintofivehealthriskcategorieswithhealthadviceprovidedasbelow.
