The British decimal ten pence coin (often shortened to 10p in writing and speech) is a denomination of sterling coinage worth one-tenth of a pound. Thetenpencecoinwasoriginallymintedfromcupro-nickel(75%Cu,25%Ni),butsince2012ithasbeenmintedinnickel-platedsteelduetotheincreasingpriceofmetal.FromJanuary2013theRoyalMintbeganaprogrammetograduallyremovethepreviouscupro-nickelcoinsfromcirculationandreplacethemwiththenickel-platedsteelversions.[3] AsofMarch2014therewereanestimated1,631 million10pcoinsincirculation,withanestimatedfacevalueof£163.08 million.[4] 10pcoinsarelegaltenderforamountsuptothesumof£5whenofferedinrepaymentofadebt;however,thecoin'slegaltenderstatusisnotnormallyrelevantforeverydaytransactions. Aswithallnewdecimalcurrency,until1984theportraitofQueenElizabethIIbyArnoldMachinappearedontheobverse,[6]inwhichtheQueenwearsthe'GirlsofGreatBritainandIreland'Tiara. Between1985and1997theportraitbyRaphaelMakloufwasused,[6]inwhichtheQueenwearstheGeorgeIVStateDiadem. On30September1992areduced-sizeversionofthe10pencecoinwasintroduced.Theolderandlargerversionofthecoinwaswithdrawnfromcirculationon30June1993.Thedesignremainedunchanged. Reverse[edit] Reverse:1982–2008 OriginalReverseDesign[edit] Theoriginalreverseofthecoin,designedbyChristopherIronside,andusedfrom1968to2008,isacrownedlion(formally,PartofthecrestofEngland,alionpassantguardantroyallycrowned),withthenumeral"10"belowthelion,andeitherNEWPENCE(1968–1981)orTENPENCE(1982–2008)abovethelion. RoyalShieldDesign[edit] InAugust2005theRoyalMintlaunchedacompetitiontofindnewreversedesignsforallcirculatingcoinsapartfromthe£2coin.[7]Thewinner,announcedinApril2008,wasMatthewDent,whosedesignsweregraduallyintroducedintothecirculatingBritishcoinagefrommid-2008.[8]Thedesignsforthe1p,2p,5p,10p,20pand50pcoinsdepictsectionsoftheRoyalShieldthatformthewholeshieldwhenplacedtogether.Theshieldinitsentiretywasfeaturedonthenow-obsoleteround£1coin.The10pcoindepictspartofthefirstquarteroftheshield,showingtwoofthelionspassantfromtheRoyalBannerofEngland,withthewordsTENPENCEabovetheshielddesign.Thecoin'sobverseremainslargelyunchanged,butthebeading(theringofdotsaroundthecoin'scircumference),whichnolongerfeaturesonthecoin'sreverse,hasalsobeenremovedfromtheobverse.
