Abilitiesthatdependonthepresenceofspecificexperiencesareexperience-dependent.Parentsneedtoprovidetheappropriateearlylifeexperiencesfortheseskillstodevelop.Someexamplesareemotionalregulation,speech&language,andtheabsolutepitch. Butthegoodnewsismanyexperience-dependenttraitshavesensitiveperiodsratherthancriticalperiods.Evenwhentheparticularlifeexperiencesaremissingduringtheoptimaltime,theskillscanstilldevelop.Itmightjustbeharderortakelonger. Amongtheexperience-dependentabilities,emotionalregulationishandsdownthemostessentialonetoachild’sgrowthandfuturewell-being.Sothemostimportantthingforparentstodoistoprovideanurturingenvironmentforyourchildandhelpyourchildbuildresilience. FinalThoughtsOnCriticalPeriod Asparents,it’sbetterifwemakesureourchildrenarenotdeprivedofcriticalexperiences,especiallyduringcriticalperiods.However,itdoesn’tmeanweshouldbuythelatest“mozartforbabies”DVDorsignourtoddlersupindozesofenrichmentclasses.Whatourchildrenneedareanurturingenvironmentandexposuretocommonlifeexperiences,suchastalking,playingandreadingtothem.Also,otherunderlyingfactorscouldaffecttheoutcomes,too.
