《汉语大字典》是一九七五年由国家出版事业管理局在广州召开的全国词典编写出版规划会议上提出，经周恩来、邓小平同志批准组织编写的。

会议确定由湖北、四川两省出版部门组织有关专业工作者协作编写。

一九七八年国务院把这部大型字典列为国家文化建设中的一项重点科研项目；一九八三年，这部字典又被正式列为哲学社会科学“六五”规划的国家重点科研项目。

《汉语大字典》的编写出版工作，受到了中共中央和国务院的重视。
