Herearesomeshortcutstospecificsectionsofcontentifyou’reinahurry: JesustheEvangelist StartingWiththeRightPerspective CommonObstaclestoSharingJesus God’sOriginalDesignforEvangelism FalseBeliefsAboutEvangelism CruandEvangelism EvangelismResources JesustheEvangelist Jesushimselfwasthemostskilledevangelist.HededicatedthelastthreeyearsofHislifetocommunicatinganddemonstratingwhatwastrueaboutGodtopeopleindesperateneedofHismessage.  Jesushealedthesick,performedmiracles,taughtthetruthaboutGod,andultimatelydiedonacrossforthepeopleHeloved.Jesusmetpeopleintheirplaceofneed.Hemetthemwithgraceandtruth(Luke19:1-10)andthengavethemhopebypointingthemtowardHisFatherinheaventhrougharelationshipwithHimself.  ThenJesussaid,“CometoMe,allofyouwhoarewearyandcarryheavyburdens,andIwillgiveyourest.TakeMyyokeuponyou.LetMeteachyou,becauseIamhumbleandgentleatheart,andyouwillfindrestforyoursouls.ForMyyokeiseasytobear,andtheburdenIgiveyouislight.”— Matthew11:28-30,NLT HelivedlifeamongpeoplewhohadrejectedthetruthaboutGodorhadneverhearditexplainedinawaytheycouldgrasp.HedidnotjudgeorcondemnthembuthelpedthemontheirjourneytowardarelationshipwithGod.  Wearecalledtodothesame,andweareabletodothesameaswerelyonthestrengthofGod’sHolySpirit,wholiveswithineveryonewhotrustsinJesus.AswefollowJesus,welearnfromHimandHisexample,andintheprocesswebecomemorelikeHim(Matthew4:19).  Evangelismisnotaskillorarolereservedforthechosenfew.Everybelieveriscalledtoalwaysbereadytogiveareasonforthehopewithinthem,withgentlenessandrespect(1Peter3:15).Everybelieveriscalledtogoandmakedisciples(Matthew28:16-20).  Butwhy?  Theanswerislove.Love,forJesusandothers,isthereasontoshareJesus.Thinkaboutitlikethis:Whatisthegreatestthingthathaseverhappenedtoyou?IftheanswerisknowingChristpersonally,whatthenisthegreatestthingyoucoulddoforsomeoneelse?IntroducethemtoJesus. ButinyourheartsrevereChristasLord.Alwaysbepreparedtogiveananswertoeveryonewhoasksyoutogivethereasonforthehopethatyouhave.Butdothiswithgentlenessandrespect.— 1Peter3:15,NIV StartingWiththeRightPerspective   Thegospeliswhatbringsmeaningtoabrokenworld,andevangelismisthehow.Thissoundsgreatintheory.Why,then,arethreeoutoffivefollowersofJesus,accordingtoBarnaResearch,notsharingChristwiththepeopleintheirlives?  EvangelismisfirstandforemostaworkofGod—Hechangespeople’shearts,notyou.  Often,ourperspectiveorassumptionsshapehowwefeelaboutthings.It’simportanttohavetherightperspectiveaboutsharingJesuswithothers.  EvangelismisfirstandforemostaworkofGod —Heistheonewhochangespeople’shearts,notyou.FollowersofJesushavetheprivilegeofenteringintotheworkHeisalreadydoinginpeople’slivesbyshowingupandtakingstepsoffaithtosharetheirtestimonyorshareaboutwhoJesusiswiththepeopleHebringsintotheirpath. Haveyoueverheardthatperspectiveonevangelism?Whataboutthisone?BillBright,theco-founderofCru,said,“SuccessinwitnessingissimplytakingtheinitiativetoshareChristinthepoweroftheHolySpirit,andleavingtheresultstoGod.” TheseperspectivesremindusthatGodistheonewhochangesheartsandtransformslives,notus.Ourjobistobereadyandtaketheinitiativetosharethereasonforthehopewehavewithgentlenessandrespect. CommonObstaclestoSharingJesus   Havingthesebiblicalperspectivescanhelpyougetoveranyobstaclesthatcomeyourway.  1.PastExperience Perhapsyouhaveseenpoorexamplesofwitnessing. Itseemstheexperiencespeopleremembermostaretheoneswhereothersignorethemordon’ttakethetimetolistentotheirfeelingsorpersonalneeds.TheyaretheoneswhotrytopushthemessageofJesusonpeopleormakethemfeelliketheyarepointingfingersfornotbelievingastheydo.  Frankly,anegativeexperienceofevangelismmaylingerinyourmemorylongerthanapositiveone.Butjustbecauseapastexperienceofsomeonesharingwithyouortryingtoshareyourfaithwithsomeonedidnotgowell,thatdoesnotmeanyoushouldwriteoffevangelismassomethingforsomeoneelse.GodcanchangeyourperspectiveasyoutrustinHim.  2.Fear Often,fearisthereasonpeopledon’tshareChristwithothers:Fearthatitwillendarelationship.Fearthatyouwillbemisunderstood.Fearthatyouwon’thavealltheanswers.IfyouknowandremindyourselfthatGodgoesbeforeyou,thatHeisalwayswithyou,andwhatevangelismis,thatcanhelpyoudealwithanyfearyouface. 3.NotKnowingHowtoShare Ifyou’resimplylookingforsomeideasabouthowtolearntoshareyourfaith withthepeopleinyourlife,checkoutourguidetopersonalevangelism. It’simportanttohavetherightperspectiveasyoushareyourfaithandlearnmoreaboutwaystodoevangelism.   UnderstandingandgrowinginpersonalevangelismdependsonawillingnesstolearnandadesiretotrustGod.Ifyourheartisopenandwilling,GodwillhelpyougrowinyourskillsforsharingHimwithothers.Hewilluseyouropenheart,yourwordsandyouractionstochangeotherpeople’slives.  AgoodwaytounderstandmoreaboutwhatevangelismisandwhyGodinvitesusalltobeinvolvedinitistothinkaboutthewayGodhasdesignedittofunction. God’sOriginalDesignforEvangelism   God’smasterplanistousehumanstospreadthemessageofJesusChristtotheworld. JesuscameandtoldHisdisciples,“Ihavebeengivenallauthorityinheavenandonearth.Therefore,goandmakedisciplesofallthenations,baptizingtheminthenameoftheFatherandtheSonandtheHolySpirit.TeachthesenewdisciplestoobeyallthecommandsIhavegivenyou.Andbesureofthis:Iamwithyoualways,eventotheendoftheage.”— Matthew28:18-20,NLT  Godcouldhaveusedanystrategy,butHechoseus.Why?BecauseourpersonalspiritualgrowthasChristiansandthemissionHegaveuswerenevermeanttobeseparated.  WegrowaswetrustHim.HewantsustoseeHimatworkintheworldandknowwearepartofit. Thisisbothanexcitingandhumblingreality.EventhoughevangelismisfirstandforemostaworkofGod,HewantsandinvitesyoutoparticipatewithHim.Hewantstouseyou.  RightbeforeJesusleftearthtoreturntoHisFatherinheaven,HesaidtoHisfollowers,“Goandmakedisciplesofallnations,baptizingtheminthenameoftheFatherandoftheSonandoftheHolySpirit,andteachingthemtoobeyeverythingIhavecommandedyou.AndsurelyIamwithyoualways,totheveryendoftheage”(Matthew25:19-20,NewInternationalVersion).  Thiswasadirectcommand,andyoucanimaginethedumbstruckfacesofthemenandwomenHewasspeakingto.  ButHealsosaid,“YouwillreceivepowerwhentheHolySpiritcomesonyou;andyouwillbemywitnessesinJerusalem,andinallJudeaandSamaria,andtotheendsoftheearth”(Acts1:8,NIV).   Therearetwoimportanttruthsinthesepassages.ThefirstisthatJesuswantsHisfollowers,includingyou,totakeHismessagetotheworld.  Thesecondtruthisthereasonthatitdoesnotfeellikemissionimpossible:Hepromisestoalwaysbewithyou.TheHolySpiritlivesinsideeveryChristian.HedirectsandempowersChristianstosharethemessageofChrist. Ifevangelismfeelsoverwhelmingtoyou,perhapsthat’sbecauseyouhaveyettoshareGod’sperspectiveonit.Thisissoimportant,soifyoutakeonethingfromreadingthispage,Ihopeit’sthis: ItisnotuptoyouormetomakesomeoneelsebelieveinGod.ThatisGod’sresponsibility.Hemayuseyoutoofferaninvitationtosomeone,butwhethertheyacceptitornotisbetweenthatpersonandGodHimself.  YourjobissimplytosharethetruthaboutJesuswithpeoplewhohaveyettohearitoracceptit.Goddoestherealworkofchangingthewaypeoplethinkandwhattheybelieveistrue.YourresponsibilityistosimplytaketheinitiativeandshareJesusinthepoweroftheHolySpiritandleavetheresultstoGod. GodwantsChristianstofeelcompelledtosharetheirfaithinHim,notjustobligedto.This,initself,isaworkoftheHolySpiritinyourheart.Mostofusarenaturallyreluctantoranxiousabouttalkingaboutourbeliefswithpeoplewhodonotsharethem.Wecannotcontrolhowtheywillreactorhowitmightaffectourrelationships.ThisiswhyevangelismdependsontrustingGod. Peoplewholovesharingtheirfaitharealsooftenpeoplewhoregularlyprayfortheirnon-Christianfriends.AsyouaskGodtohelpsomeoneseethetruthaboutHim,yourheartbecomesreadytobepartofhowGodanswersthatprayer. TwoBibleversespointtotheseideas:  Devoteyourselvestoprayer,beingwatchfulandthankful.(Colossians4:2,NewInternationalVersion) ButinyourheartsrevereChristasLord.Alwaysbepreparedtogiveananswertoeveryonewhoasksyoutogivethereasonforthehopethatyouhave.Butdothiswithgentlenessandrespect.(1Peter3:15,NewInternationalVersion) Ifyoudonothavealoveforevangelism,practiceprayingforyourfriendsandfamilywhodonothavearelationshipwithGod.Alsopracticetreatingpeoplewithkindnessandcompassion,especiallywhenyouaretalkingaboutGod.Theydonotwanttofeelliketheyarebeingcorrectedanymorethanyouwould.  ThewayJesustreatedpeoplelaidthefoundationforHimtosharethetruthaboutGodwiththem.  Tohaveahealthyperspectiveaboutevangelism,italsohelpstobefamiliarwithcommonmisunderstandingsaboutit.  FalseBeliefsAboutEvangelism    IfyouaskedaroomfullofChristianswhatevangelismis,it’slikelyyouwouldgetawiderangeofanswers.  Herearesomecommonfalsebeliefsaboutevangelism:  No.1:PeopledonotwanttotalkaboutGod. Thissimplyisnottrue.Peoplemightbeunwillingtolistentouslecturethemaboutwhattheyshouldbelieve.Theymightbereluctanttohearustellthemeverythingtheyhaveeverthoughtiswrong.Butpeoplearesearchingforhopeandmeaningintheirlives,todayasmuchastheyeverhave.  ThewayspeoplewanttotalkaboutGodmightchangeovertime,butpeopleareopentothinkingaboutspiritualthingsiftheycanfindsafepeopletodothatwith.  PeoplewhodonotcallthemselvesChristianswantsomeofthesamethingsaspeoplewhodo.Theywanttobelistenedtoandtreatedwithrespect.Theywantlifetomakesense.  Godistheanswertolife’sbigquestions,andpeoplewillbewillingtoexplorethosequestionsifyoutreatthemwithkindnessandrespect.  Tofindoutmoreaboutthis,read“HowPeopleReallyWanttoTalkAboutJesus.” No.2:Livingyourlifewithkindnessandcompassionisenough. Thereisapopularsaying,commonlyattributedtoFrancisofAssisi:“Preachthegospelatalltimes.Whennecessary,usewords.”ThereisactuallynohistoricalrecordthatFranciseversaidthis,andmoreimportantly,it'snotacompleteviewofwhattheBibleteaches. IntheBiblewereadthesewords,“Consequently,faithcomesfromhearingthemessage,andthemessageisheardthroughthewordaboutChrist”(Romans10:17,NIV).  Peoplecannotrespondtoaninvitationtheyhavenotreceived.ThegospelmessageisaninvitationfromGodtoreturntotherelationshipwithHimthateverypersonwasdesignedtoenjoy.Godasksustobepartofbringingthatinvitationtotheworld.PeoplewillnotknowGodwantstoforgivethemforeverythingtheyhavedoneandthatHeoffersthemeternallifeunlesssomeonetellsthem.Thatmeanswordsaswellasactions. Ifthediscipleshadnotsharedthegospelwiththeknownworld,itwouldnothavemadeitswaytoyouandme.Someonehadtosharethegospelwithsomeoneelse,whointurnshareditwithstillsomeoneelse,inorderforyoutobelieve.Thisistrueforallofus. No.3:Evangelismisasalespitch. Iknowevangelismcanfeelthisway.It’sasideeffectofsharingamessagewithsomeoneyouthinkmightnotwanttohearit.  I’vefeltaninnerconflictaboutsharingmyfaithwithsomeone,especiallywhenIhavefeltdistantfromGodbeforedoingit.ButevenifIdonotfeelclosetoGod,thetruthisHeisasclosetomeasever.ThebestwaytoavoidevangelismfeelinglikeasalespitchistobeauthenticabouthowGodhaschangedyourlifeandalsohowitdidnotautomaticallymakeyourlifeperfect.  Peoplewillrespectyourhonestyandvulnerabilityiftheyseeyouasapersoncontinuingtowrestlethroughlife’squestionswithGod.    No.4:EvangelismearnsuscreditwithGod. Goddoesnotloveyoumoreifyouevangelize.HedoesnotloveyoulessifyouareunwillingtotellothersaboutHim.Iusedtostrugglewiththisfalsebelief.IthoughtifIsharedmyfaith,Godwouldlovememore.Thisisalie.  ThetruthisyoucannotdoanythingtomakeGodloveyoumore;Helovesyouinfinitelyalready,andHewillnotstop.   No.5:Evangelismistryingtowinanargument. ThisfalseviewofsharingJesuswithotherscanresultinunhealthyandevenharmfulencounters,likeevangelistsyellingatpeopleorbotheringthemuntiltheyrespondtoamessage.Peoplewiththisviewmustconvinceothersbecausetheir“success”atevangelismdependsontheirownefforts.  Ifyou’veexperiencedsomeonesharingChristthiswaywithyou,first,IwanttosayI’msorry.ThisapproachdoesnotreflecttheheartofGodortheheartofmostChristians.  Evangelismissupposedtobeaboutaskinggoodquestions,askingforpermissiontoshareyourperspective,showingempathy,andcontinuingtocareforapersonnomatterhowtheyrespondtothemessageofChrist.  Misconceptionsaboutevangelismarecommonandnormal.Butit’svitalweseethingsfromabiblicalperspectiveifwewanttobepartofthesolution,notpartoftheproblem.Ifyouareunsureaboutyourownperspectiveonevangelism,asktheHolySpirittogiveyouinsight,andtalktomatureChristiansaboutit.  CruandEvangelism   CruisacommunitypassionateaboutconnectingpeopletoJesusChrist.WewanttocomealongsideothersontheirspiritualjourneysandhelpthemtaketheirnextbeststepoffaithtowardChrist.WelongtoseemovementsofChristianssharingtheirfaithineverywalkoflifesothateveryoneknowssomeonewhotrulyfollowsJesus.  Crucontinuestoexistasanorganizationbecausethisvisionhasnotyetbeenfulfilled.TherearemanypeoplearoundtheworldwhohaveneverheardthemessageofJesus. EvangelismistheheartbeatofCru.ThroughministriesliketheJesusFilmProject,thegospelisconstantlybeingtranslatedintonewlanguagessoitcanbetakentogroupsofpeoplewhohaveneverhearditintheirnativetongue.  CrualsoofferslotsofopportunitiesforpeopletogosharethegospelwithintheU.S.andoverseas.Ifyouwanttodevelopyourconfidenceinevangelisminanotherpartoftheworld,Crucansendyouthere.The“SharetheGospel”sectionofCru’swebsitealsoprovidestoolsforyoutouseifyouwouldliketoshareyourfaithbutarenotsurehow.  Forexample,ifyouwantsimple,clearpresentationsofthegospelmessageyoucandiscusswithafriend,trytheGodToolsapp.  Ifyouwanttobemoreintentionalintakingstepsoffaithwiththepeopleinyourlifeoryouwanttofindacommunityofothersyoucandothiswith,havealookatMissionHub.
