BREIFINTRODUCION InadditiontobeingoneoftheoldestchemistrydepartmentsinChina,establishedin1907,theChemistryDisciplineatSichuanUniversity(SCU)hasbecomeoneofthemostimportantbasesfortrainingchemistsandundertakingscientificresearchinWesternChina.TheCollegeofChemistry(CoC)atSCUwasamongthefirstselectionofacademicentitiesapprovedbytheMinistryofEducationforpostgraduateeducation.TheChemistryDisciplinehasbeendesignatedasaNationalBaseforFundamentalScientificResearchandTeachingTrainingandthechemistryprogramwasselectedasoneofthefeatureddisciplinesinChina.Moreover,theChemistryDisciplinewasselectedbytheMinistryofEducationtoimplementtheNationalTop-NotchUndergraduateTrainingPilotPlan,theNationalProgramforStrengtheningFundamentalDisciplines,andtheTop-NotchUndergraduateTrainingPlan2.0.Recently,theChemistrydisciplineatSCUwasselectedbytheMinistryofEducationasoneoftheNational“DoubleFirst-Rate”disciplines. TheChemistryDisciplineatSichuanUniversityprovesitsworthasabaseforscientificresearch,runningoneStateKeyLaboratory,twoNational&LocalJointEngineeringlaboratories,and10ProvincialKeycentersandlaboratories.ThisincludestheStateKeyLaboratoryofPolymerMaterialEngineering,theNational&LocalJointEngineeringLaboratoryforEco-FriendlyPolymericMaterials,theNational&LocalJointEngineeringLaboratoryforthePreparationofBio-OilfromHigh-EnergyVegetativeMatter,theKeyLaboratoryforGreenChemistryandTechnology(MinistryofEducation),theEngineeringResearchCenterforEnvironmentallyFriendlyPolymerMaterials(MinistryofEducation),andtheProvincial&MinisterialCollaborativeInnovationCenterforEco-friendlyandFire-safetyPolymericMaterials.TheKeyLaboratoryforGreenChemistryandTechnologyfromtheMinistryofEducationisthefirstkeylaboratoryinChinawhichwasestablishedforthepurposeofcarryingoutresearchingreenchemistryandtechnologyanditwasratedexcellentbytheMinistryofEducationinthe2013and2019regularevaluations.Moreover,weweregrantedtwonationalbasesundertheProgramforIntroducingTalentsofDisciplinetoUniversities(“111Project”),namely,“theNationalBaseofTalentIntroductionandInnovationintheDisciplineofGreenChemistryandTechnology”and“theNationalBaseofTalentIntroductionandInnovationintheDisciplineofEco-friendlyandFire-safety”. 2. REPRESENTATIVEACADEMICSTAFF ThesuccessoftheChemistryDisciplineatSichuanUniversitybenefitsfromitsexcellentfacultyandstaff.SincethemodernChemistryDepartmentwasestablished,manyeminentscholars,includingHongjuanRen,HongyuanZhang,QuanZhang,andGuosenYan,andmanyothers,haveservedasfaculty.Currently,theCoCfeaturesafacultyof122members(70FullProfessorsand44AssociateProfessors),includingover40nationally-recognizedtalents.SuchluminariesintheCoCincludetwoAcademiciansoftheChineseAcademyofSciences(Prof.XiaomingFengandProf.QingshiZhu),oneAcademicianoftheChineseAcademyofEngineering(Prof.YuzhongWang),oneNationalTeachingMaster,16distinguishedprofessorsunderfourtypesofnationalprograms(the“CheungKong”ScholarsoftheMinistryofEducation,theNationalScienceFundforDistinguishedYoungScholars,theRecruitmentProgramofGlobalExperts,andtheLeadingScientificExpertsforScientificInnovationundertheTen-ThousandTalentsPlan),20youngoutstandingprofessorsunderfourtypesofnationalprograms(theRecruitmentProgramforYoungGlobalExperts,theSpecialProgramofYoungTop-NotchTalents,theYoungProgramfor“CheungKong”Scholars,andtheNationalScienceFundforOutstandingYoungScholars). Furthermore,theDisciplinewasawardedtwo“InnovativeResearchGroup”designationsfromtheNationalNaturalScienceFoundationofChinaonthesubjectof“NewReactionsandStrategiesforHighlySelectiveOrganicSynthesis”and“SyntheticChemistry”,aNationalTeachingTeamon“GreenChemistry”,andfiveTeaching&ResearchTeamsattheprovinciallevel. 3. REPRESENTATIVEGRADUATES Weplacecultivatingscientificexpertswithmoralintegrityasatoppriorityandweapplythisphilosophyintoteachingandtraininginordertocultivatemoreexcellentexpertsandsocialelites.Eachyearonaverage,weadmit300freshmen,185Masters,and110PhDstudentswithgoodqualityandpotential.Moreover,theChemistryDisciplineatSCUhasmadefruitfulachievementsinenrichingthenationalreservoirofintellectualswithupto15,000graduatessincethefoundingofthePeople’sRepublicofChinain1949.ThosedistinguishedalumniincludesixAcademiciansoftheChineseAcademyofSciencesandtheChineseAcademyofEngineering,namely,ProfessorRongtiChen,ProfessorLunXiao,ProfessorShiyangGao,ProfessorFen’erChen,ProfessorYuliangZhaoandProfessorDaqiaoMeng,over30MinistryofEducation“CheungKong”ScholarsandawardeesoftheNationalScienceFundforDistinguishedYoungScholars,andmanydistinguishedprofessorsabroad,suchasProf.ZhenChengatStanfordUniv.,Prof.ShouhengSunatBrownUniv.,etal. 4. REPRESENTATIVEACHIEVEMENTS Aimingatnationalinnovation-drivenstrategies,theChemistryDisciplineputsemphasisonstrengtheninginnovationandimprovingengineeringtransformation,highlightingseveralrepresentativeachievementswithoriginalityandinternationalprestigeinmanydistinctiveresearchfields.Forexample,ProfessorXiaomingFeng,AcademicianoftheChineseAcademyofSciences,developedanewfamilyofprivilegedchiralN,N’-dioxideamideligandsandcatalysts(TheFengCatalyst),whichbreakthetraditionalconceptofrigidconformationforprivilegedligandsandhavebeenappliedextensively.Theseresearchachievementsmadegreatimpactshomeandabroad.InrecognitionofProf.Feng’sseminalcontributions,thefirstcatalyticasymmetricRoskampreactionwasnamedasthe“Roskamp–Fengreaction”inElsevier’sbookof“OrganicSynthesisBasedonNameReactions”,whichisthefirstOrganicNameReactionforlocalresearchworkinChina.Furthermore,ProfessorXiaomingFenghaswonnumerousinfluentialawards,includingtheStateNaturalScienceAward(secondclass),theFutureSciencePrize-PhysicalSciences,andaTanKahKeeScienceAward.Asasecondexample,ProfessorYuzhongWang,AcademicianoftheChineseAcademyofEngineering,putforwardsomenewflameretardanttheoriesandmethodsinrealizingthehigh-efficiencycondensed-phaseflameretardationofhalogen-freesystemsandtheseintellectualandpracticalcontributionshavetackledenormouschallengesintraditionalflame-retardationtheories.TheresearchachievementsofProfessorYuzhongWangledtothedevelopmentofflame-retardanttechnologiesinChinaandtheworld,andtheyopenedupnewrealmsforgreenflameretardation.Accordingly,ProfessorYuzhongWang’sgrouphasbecomeoneofthemostinternationallyinfluentialresearchgroupsinthefieldofflameretardation.Theflame-retardantpolyesterproducedusinghisgroup’shalogen-freeflame-retardanttechnologiesmakesupto80%ofglobalmarketshare.Asaresult,ProfessorWangandhisgroupclaimedallthreemajornationalawards,namely,theStateNaturalScienceAward,theStateTechnologicalInventionAwardandtheStateScientificandTechnologicalProgressAward. Inthepastfewyears,theChemistryDisciplineatSCUhaskeptenhancinguniversity-industrycooperationandhasconstantlypromotedindustrialdevelopment.TheCoCatSCUhasestablishedaninnovationsystemofuniversity-industrycooperationdedicatedtodevelopingindustrialgenerictechnologies,keytechnologies,andforward-lookingtechnologiesbyprovidingtechnicalserviceandconsultationforover50enterpriseseachyear.Forexample,theresearchgroupledbyProf.YaoqiangChenmadeamajorbreakthroughinthepreparationofcatalystsandcatalyst-carriermaterialsforgasolineanddieselfuelsforautomobileaswellasnaturalgas(CNG)-poweredvehiclesandmotorcycles.Thisdiscoverybrokethemonopolyoflargeglobalchemicalcompanies,suchasBASFCorporation,JohnsonMatthey,andUmiore,inChina.BasedontheresearchoutputofProf.Chen’sgroup,SinocatEnvironmentalTechnologyCo.,Ltd.wasfoundedtoacceleratethecommercializationofscientificandtechnologicalachievementswithaworld-classproductionlineofcatalystsforthepurificationofvehicleexhaust.Asaresult,theindustrializedproductionofcatalystsforthefourtypesofvehicleshasbeenachievedandthecatalyticexhaustproductshavebeencertifiedbyover2000typesofvehicleslistedinthe“CatalogueofEnvironmentallyFriendlyVehiclesofChina”.ThedomesticmarketshareofthecatalystforCNGvehiclesthatmeettheChinesePhaseVIExhaustEmissionStandardhasreachedover40%anditisrankedfirstamongothercatalystproductsinChina.Inaddition,itsannualturnoverreached3billionChineseyuan(CNY)intheyearof2020,andtheresearchfindingshavebeenawardedtwoprizesfromSichuanScientificandTechnologicalProgressAward.Asasecondexample,Prof.HuaChen’sgroupdevelopedsustainabletechnologiesforwater-organictwo-phaseselectivehydroformylationofolefinswithindependentintellectualpropertyrightsandtheyhavesuccessfullyappliedthistechnologyinindustry.Towardthisend:ademonstrationplantwithannualyieldof100,000tonsof“higheralcoholssynthesizedbycoal-oilolefins”wasconstructedbasedon“thecleantechnologyofsynthesizinghigheralcoholsusinghigherolefins”,aplantforn-propylalcoholwithannualyieldof40,000tonswascompletedbasedon“thecleantechnologyofpreparingpropionaldehydeorpropanolfromthehydroformylationofethylene”,andaplantforbutyraldehydeisunderconstructionbasedon“thecleantechnologyofcompoundingbutanolandoctanolfromthehydroformylationofpropylene”;theannualyieldforthislatterplantisestimatedtobeupto220,000tons. Overthelastdecade,theChemistryDisciplineatSichuanUniversityhasmaderemarkableprogressineducationreform,scientificresearch,andtransformationofengineeringandindustrialtechnology.ThefacultyintheCoChavebeenawardedover20majorprizesatnational,provincial,orcommunitylevels,includingtwosecondprizesofChina’sStateNaturalScienceAward,asecondprizeintheStateTechnologicalInventionAward,asecondprizeoftheNationalScienceandTechnologyProgressAward,aFutureSciencePrize-PhysicalSciences,aNationalInnovationPioneerAward,aTanKahKeeScienceAward,twoprizesofthe“HoLeungHoLee”FoundationPrizeforScientificandTechnologicalProgress.Byconstantlyexploringtheteachingmodeledbyexcellentresearch,ProfessorXiaomingFengwasawardedtheDistinguishedTeachingAwardin2020,whichisthemostprestigiousprizeinhighereducationsincethefoundingofthePeople’sRepublicofChina. Duringthepastfiveyears,facultyintheCoCwereawardedmanycriticalresearchgrantsandhigh-impactresearchprogramsfromnationalandprovincialfundingagencies.Theseinclude168researchgrantsfromtheNSFC,fourMajorPrograms,and14nationalkeyprojects.ItisworthmentioningthattheamountofresearchfundingthatwasgrantedoneachMajorProgramisover20millionCNYsandoneMajorProgramforResearchonNationalMajorResearchInstrumentsreceivedfundingtotaling40.21millionCNYs. Ourfacultyhavepublishedmanyhigh-profilearticles.Over1600oftheseoriginalcontributionsareSCI-listedpapers,andatleast180ofthemwerepublishedinhigh-impactjournalssuchasNature,NatureChemistry,theJournaloftheAmericanChemicalSociety,AngewandteChemie,andadvancedMaterials.Finally,membersofourfacultyweregranted125patentsfortheiroutstandingdiscoveries. 5. DOMESTIC&INTERNATIONALINFLUENCESOFTHEDISCIPLINE Severalcharacteristicandadvantageoussub-disciplineshavebeenformedwithintheChemistryDisciplineatSCU,includingorganicchemistry,polymericchemistry,andradiochemistry.TheorganicchemistryprogramatSCUisratedasaNationalKeySub-disciplineandhasmadesubstantialinternationalimpactintheresearchofchiralmolecules,C–Hbondactivation,greensyntheticmethodology,andsupramolecularchemistry.ThepolymerscienceprogramatSCUpridesitselfasaStateKeyLaboratoryandservingasaninternationalleaderintheresearchonflame-retardantpolymermaterials.AsaNationalKeyUnitofRadiochemistryappointedbytheNaturalScienceFoundationofChina,theradiochemistrysub-disciplineatSCUisanimportantbaseforcultivatingoutstandingchemistsandundertakingscientificresearch.Moreover,thisuniqueprogramhasincubatedtwoAcademiciansoftheChineseAcademyofSciences. OurfacultyhaveservedinmajoracademicorganizationsinChinaandabroad,suchasmembersoftheStateCouncilDisciplineAppraisalGroup,executivedirectoroftheChineseChemicalSociety,directoroftheChemicalIndustryandEngineeringSocietyofChina,chairmanoftheSpecializedCommitteeofChiralChemistryinChineseChemicalSociety,honorarychairmanoftheSpecializedCommitteeofFlameRetardationinChinaOrdnanceSociety,vice-chairmanoftheSpecializedCommitteeofBiodegradablePlasticsofChinaPlasticsAssociation,vice-chairmanoftheNationalTechnicalStandardizationCommitteeforBio-basedMaterialsandBiodegradableProducts(SAC/TC380),vice-chairmanoftheSub-CommitteeofPlasticsintheNationalTechnicalStandardizationCommitteeforFoodContactMaterialsandProducts(TC397/SC6),vice-chairmanoftheNationalTeachingSteeringCommitteeofUniversityChemistryTeaching,memberoftheScientificBoardofInternationalSustainableChemistryCollaborativeCentre(ISC3),secretaryandchairoftheSouthwesternChinaInternationalChemicalSciencesChapteroftheAmericanChemicalSociety,associateoftheAmericanChemistrySocietyInternationalActivitiesCommittee,andothers.
