FutureMark’s3DMarkFireStrikebenchmarkisgreatforillustratingthis.InthescreenshotsyoucanseethePhysicsandCombinedscoresinbothhighperformanceandbalancedperformancemodes.TheimportantscorehereistheCombinedscore,notthephysics.Itmayseemtohavelittlemeaning,butthatcombinedscoreiswhat’smostimportant.Itrepresentstheproblemwithusingthishighperformancemode. Whatcomplicatesorobfuscatesthis,ifyou’renotparticularlytrackingthisvalueisthatbenchmarkssuchasCPU-Z(Atleastthebuilt-inbenchmark),indicatethatindeed“highperformancemode”isofferingslightlyimprovedfigures.Thenumbersareclose,butifyou’retestingwithCPU-Zoranysuchprogram,itwouldbeproofpositivetoyouthatyou’veindeedgainedsomeperformanceviathis“highperformance”mode.The3DMarkFireStrikescoreistooclosetocallandeventhoughitismarginallylower,soyou’dnotlookatthatnumberwithanysuspicion.It’swithinthetolerablemargin.
